Default 2.5 engine issue

So, my 99’ 2,5L has started smoking heavily whilst running. What would be the most likely culprint?

Link to the Air oil separator? Part number? Repair or buy new? How do I diagnose it?

I see 99610702304 is the latest version for the 99.

Just did mine on my 99 Boxster Base. Mine would smoke heavily, but only very occasionally say for example the first start after a spirited drive. So I replaced it with a URO brand I got from Rock Auto, about $120 American if I recall. I was already doing several other maintenance items, the coolant reservoir tank in particular and the AOS is in the vicinity so I did that as well. Not that difficult even with the engine in the car, unlike the 996. The bellows clamp was the tough part, but I used a screw clamp there which made it somewhat easier but still tricky to make sure everything was aligned/seated properly before tightening. Also, make sure that the hard plastic crossover line from the air intake manifold is properly seated/connected on the AOS, its at a strange angle with several other hoses/wires/ injector lines in the way and tough to seat. I tried several times and each time when I tugged on the line after seating it, it would slide right back off. You have to apply enough pressure at a difficult angle to ensure the connector engages and won't pull off after. Best of luck.

I know, URO quality can be shady, but the Boxster AOS is easily accessible as opposed to my Carrera's AOS, and even the higher quality/name brand AOS's fail randomly right out of the box. For my budget/situation, URO works for now.

You paid $120 for a URO part... and P e l i c a n sells the Porsche part for $116.

I'm lost.

80€ for the original Porsche part. Problem solved.

Thanks for the input.

Just did mine on a 98 2.5 with 195k kms that still had its original AOS (with the circular diaphragm housing placed horizontally instead of upright / vertically) . Replaced it not because of a smoking engine but because of a slight vacuum leak caused by the faulty original design of the o-ring (see arrow in pic below).
