Default 2001 Boxster S will not crank when hot

Guys, I need some assistance with my 2001 Boxster S.

Car starts and runs fine when cold but if I stop the car and want to start again when hot it has trouble cranking. It clicks and sometimes, depending on how hot the car is, it cranks a little, sort of like the battery is dead, only it isnt.

What I all ready have done:
  • Battery checks out fine
  • Replaced the starter
  • Checked all connectors and grounding in engine compartment
  • Checked Alternator charging. Charges with 13.3V on the battery
  • Removed Alternator and had it in the testbench at Advanced Auto Parts, checks out.

It happens regardless of ambient temperature. If i leave the car to cool of about an hour or so, it starts just fine again.

I have off course googled like a mad man but everything points either towards 996 heat soak on the alternator/starter cable (cable looks good) or ignition issues which I am quite sure it isnt as the car starts perfect when cold and runs great.

Is there anyone out there that has seen or heard about this as i am running low on ideas?

Best regards

Could be the Crankshaft position sensor. It should give a trouble code to confirm that.

No fault codes related to this issue, unfortunately.

What type scanner was used, some of the cheap one's won't detect this.

Foxwell NT520 with Porsche software. I am not aware if that would go for a "cheap" one?

A bad CPS will not generate any codes. You have classical symptoms of a bad CPS. I'd go ahead and replace it.

Hang on. I just saw the heading. This is not a CPS problem. You probably have a bad starter or starter solenoid. You could also have a bad ground connection.

After it's stopped and won't start, what's the voltage at the battery? Have you had the battery load tested? If it's under 13v, it probably has a bad coil. Have you tried a jumper battery? Your new starter may be drawing excessive voltage when it's hot--gets really hot there on top of the engine.

You don't say where you are, if you were local, I could loan you a known good starter or two.

Brian,

I am near DC. Thanks for the comments, i am taking the battery to Advanced Auto parts to have it checked out today. It measures 12.4V after i shut the car of. That combined with the Alternator only putting out 13.3V may be the culpritt? Still wondering why it starts fine when cold and not when hot though.....
