I've noticed some 986 Boxsters with the three-spoke steering wheel have crests with red bars and others have the crest without the red bars.
I heard something about the ones without being 1999 Millenium Editions (?) but I'm not convinced as I've seen some 1998 model years examples, and some 2000 model years ones wearing the crest without red bars.
Whereas I've also seen some 1998, 1999, and 2000 model years examples which had the crests with the red bars.
And I've even seen one or two examples with just one red bar!
So I've come to the conclusion that the red plastic/enamel must fall out, in the same way that the ignition keys can loose the red bars too.
Can anybody confirm my theory? Or does anybody know otherwise perhaps?
I'd like to repaint the red bars on my 1999 example, but first I want to be sure it's supposed to genuinely have them!

The only variation I’ve seen is the gold crests have red bars and the silver crests don’t. Not sure if the silver crests were an option, a variant, or an aftermarket addition. Can’t imaging the enameling falling out as one piece, but anything can happen I guess.
