I'm going to update/replace my external chain tensioners during my next oil change, and was wondering, after putting the crank at TDC, is it required to lock the cams if replacing one at a time? Is it best to do them in any specific order or does it matter? Thanks for any help!!

Help everyone understand the question.
what year is the car and mileage?
3 chain or 5 chain motor?
what are you looking at replacing, the 2 chain tensioners that are accessible from outside the engine on each bank? The books all show these being changed during larger projects that include locking the cams and I would be resistant to changing them unless something was wrong. Its a solenoid and they either work or don't has been my experience.
The wear items are the pads and guides inside the chains run against; noisy startup and checking for plastic in your oil is an indication they are grinding down.
I'm due for this and looking to perform the whole mess during a clutch/FW/IMS project in the near future, but wont replace the tensioners unless they are bad.
