Default 1998 Boxster clunk in rear end on bumps

Have read some posts regarding a clunk sound when driving over bumps. some target the trailing arms, some the drop links and some the control arms. Before I start ***** nilly changing parts I could use some advice as to what would cause the noise. Is there any way to test to see which is causing the noise? Thank you in advance for your help

Track arms were noisy on mine. I just replaced them. Super easy to do.

If its the trailing arms you can suppress the noise when going over a bump by either braking or accelerating when going over the bump.

one test that my mechanic suggested was:

with the car parked. grab the rear wheel. Try rolling it forward or back and listen for metal to metal clink/clunk, this will help determine if it is the forward, rear trailing arm (what a great term). For my end of the driveway backing out bump noise, it was.

(ie the long piece that goes from the front of the rear wheel well area to the knuckle. has a press in fitting in one end, and kinda tuning fork shaped on the other. about 30" long)

yes the track arms common problem, replace them and you will not believe the difference, we get used to the bumping and to have it totally gone makes a big difference, easy to do we sell many of them

on mine, I bought a TRW part for the 987... length is exactly the same, casting is a little different. worked perfectly, and was cheaper than what I could find the 986 part for.

I had replaced the trailing arms with no effect but I jacked up the car and could push up on the rear suspension and hear and feel a knock in what feels like the drop link. more on left than right and that is where the noise seems to come from. New drop links next to change.

another chapter in the continueing saga on how to get rid of a clunk in the rear end. I replaced the drop links today and there is an immediate reduction in the noise when I go over a bump. One of the links came out easily, just pulled it free. The other was a problem. Could not get it to slide out of the mount on the spindle. Tried hammer and punch, no go. Finally put some pressure on it with an open end wrench while "unscrewing" with my ground down 17mm wrench. LIttle by little but finally out. New one would not slide in but I "screwed" it in until I could get a nut on it to drawn it through. Glad to see some improvement on the noise.

one more chapter. Replaced the rear control arms today and clunk noise is better but not gone. Next will be to try and see if the shocks are causing the noise.

Not sure if anyone has suggested this but worn engine/transmission mount(s)?

Mine don't have a clunk, it has more of a rattle, sounds like it is coming from the right back, around the wheel area., Not been checking for it yet, but will when it warms up.

I've got something similar, coming from behind on the passenger side. Best way I can describe it is rocks rattling around in a plastic container. I only ever hear it when going over short, abrupt bumps (think like large cracks in pavement) regardless of whether the car's warmed up or not

Mine has been clunking for a while; I only hear it on low speed bumps. I sense it is in the upper shock/spring mount area. It's up high in the suspension on mine. I haven't begun investigating this yet, so I don't know whether this is even a possibility.

Worn motor mounts cause a clunk. I had to deal with this when I had a 986. More noticeable a lower speeds due to less other noise. The rubber within the mount just gives up after a while (due to miles and/or age).
