Try to stretch your budget and get into the 987 series Boxster starting in 2005. The 2006 is a real nice sweet spot. This will give you a greatly improved car over the first gen Boxster. Engine and interior being two of the biggest improvements.
This should be moved to the proper 986 Forum.

I always liked how the 986 looked better than then 987 especially with the aero kit... but you definitely want the 2004 because they got a 3-layer roof and glass rear window that the earlier 986s didn’t have.

Or try to find an Anniversary 2004 Boxster S. Nice bundle. Cocoa leather, sport exhaust and GT Silver paint.

If you can't afford the later models, don't hesitate to buy an old 986. Just try to find one with over 100k miles and spend the couple hundred to have a good pre-purchase inspection done by a reputable independent mechanic.

+1 on the 100K+ miles. It is interesting how that number magically makes the cars less expensive. My 2004S with 112K miles uses no oil, pulls nicely, has no rattles and sounds great. Definitely do the PPI!
