2004 Boxster falling on its face
So we have a 2004 Boxster that arrived at the shop, runs perfectly when cold but as soon as it warms up to 180 it will fall flat on its face at 4500 rpm and will not rev any higher. Violently bucks like the car is going to come apart until backed off the throttle. As long as one drives under 4500 rpm the car is perfectly normal, except when letting it idle, after it warms up. It suddenly, out of the blue, dies. It will only restart if the throttle is depressed. The engine light is also on. Have not plugged in into the scanner yet though.

Not being familiar with the background of the car, its history, at least recent history, really stale (> 6 months old) gas can be a problem. Or if the car has sat a while unused rodent damage is also a possibility.
Did you check for any pending OBD2 codes?
The E-gas system is pretty well monitored as it is a safety critical system.
But check out the E-Gas system first if you want to.
My info is to clear codes -- even if none are present -- then do an E-Gas calibration -- instructions should be in the owners manual -- then check for codes. If any E-Gas codes appear there is a fault in this system.
