I got tired of using loaner helmets. I want to buy one for autocross, and want to make sure it will be OK for other applications.
Currently, I race at a Canadian club, which follows modified Canadian National (CNAC) rules. They require:
Snell Memorial Foundation 1995 (or later).
Will this also work for Solo I events (which I hope to try in the future), PCA events, autoX's in USA, etc.

My suggestion is to get a Snell 2000 approved helmet with an SA rating. M-rated (Motorcycle) helmets are acceptable in most autocross venues, but SA rated (Special Application - IE auto racing) is preferred and highly recommended.

Check out Racerwholesale. They have alot of good non-big-name supplies. Check the G-Force brand of helmets: they offer the same crashworthiness and features as a brand name helmet for far less the cost.

One thing you might want to consider is whether you want a full face helmet or not. While I have a Bieffe full face which does double duty for DE and AX, I'm finally going to bite the bullet this year and buy a seperate open helmet for AX. Don't really need the added protection in an AX situation and they are a bit more comfortable when its on the humid side. OTOH, if you intend to do track events, I would stick with a full face.

I think that I have the best of both worlds. I bought a Bell full face without a visor. I dont have to worry about everything getting fogged up and in the summer its still pretty cool.

I recommend going to a local helmet shop and trying on the varius helmets; find one that fits you right...this is very important.

Once you know what helmet you want and what size, then go online and order it if you can find better pricing.

I'd be careful about that. I got into the habit of leaving my visor up at the track because of fogging and heat issues. However, after having a couple stray pieces of rubber fly in through the driver's side window, I've since decided to keep the visor closed at all times.

Having rubber (or worse, a rock) hit your face or your eye at track speeds could be ugly.

I have the Stand 21 Double-duty. It is an open helmet with a visor and chin protector for closed car and you can add on a full visor for open wheel. It is expensive, but it is the lightest helmet made, very strong, and very comfortable (you can get it custom fit as well). Most larger suppliers carry the brand. I got mine from Sube sports.

Why not make it simple. You must have used several different helmet models. Pick the one that fit well and buy a new one for yourself. Most places will not sell a SA 95 helmet now that the standard is SA 2000. I'd stick with a full face helmet as it gives more protection.

I wear a Bell M3 Pro and I am very happy with it.

Or you might want to buy an inexpensive motorcycle helmet for autox and wait until next year to buy an SA helmet, since SA2005-spec will come out next year. Conversely, later this year you'll probably find some great deals on current SA2000 helmets as the distributors try to dump them off to make room for the new SA2005 stuff.

I don't want to sound negative, but the autocross forum is NOT the forum that people check frequently: I posted this question about 8 months ago, and every few months this topic comes back...
I bought a helmet a while ago. Still, I appreciate the comments.
