I have a question about video cam installation on a 911 for Autocross.

What is the easiest way to mount a small digital camera on the car that will pass tech inspection? I mean, I don't think any of these suction cup mounts or vent mount things would really do the job. Or do they?

I don't have a rollbar, so I'm looking for a good way to do it.

If someone can show a picture of their camera mount, I'd love to see it.

I was thinking of drilling a hole in my dashboard or something like that for a permanent mount. I doubt it will reduce the resale value of my 1999 C4 with 160,000 Km on it, and I am not planning to sell the car for a while yet. What do you guys think I could do for a video cam mount that would check out for tech inspection?

Why in the world do you shift to 1st and then immediately to 2nd? You are in 1st for so short a time that your hand never leaves the shifter. That can't possibly be the fastest way.

The suction cup mounts are just fine, and pass tech at all the local clubs here. Tech will grab it and give it a shake to make sure it's on secure, and then you're off. I use a suction cup windshield mount for my cell phone, and use that as a camcorder.

Here are my clips from SCCA Southeast Divisional at ACU4 (VA Beach) in April.

Our typical small, 1st gear lot. Not many big lots available here.

I mixed in some music so as to mask the sound of the tortured engine. ;-)

Wow, Brian! Nice video production.

That sure is a lot of turning even for autocorss. I'd like to see you on a bigger lot.

Is there any way to mount the camera just a little bit higher? You can't really see over the hood. Also you need a wider angle lens so we can see more of the course. Some camcordders allow you to screw in filters. I have a 2:1 wide angle filter that really helps with in-car stuff. Only costs $35.

Thanks for the kind words, but I owe it all to my Mac and iMovie!

Seriously, that was shot with a GoPro, so there are no lens attachments. I have been experimenting with different mounting locations. With the mounts I have, that is about as high up as I can get it with ought trying to have it hang down from the back window.

I will post another video later that shows a composite lap with several of the camera angles that I have been playing with.

Brian
