I think the small crack should be OK, but I'm not an expert there.
Many car clubs host autocross events. I belong to Porsche and BMW clubs and other clubs will often let you run with them with these memberships. They pay a fixed fee for course rental and a full run group helps the club. I go with one group or another every weekend and got wifey hooked a few weeks ago.
Good luck and remember that you are there to have fun.

I have worked tech in Zone 8 for 6 years now, and we would never disqualify a car for a small crack in the windshield. It is laminated safety glass, and is not going to cause a problem.

If it is not too big, you might try one of the epoxy injection fixes. Your insurance will usually waive the deductible for that, as it is cheaper than replacing the windshield.

Don't delay--cracks have a way of propagating with each expansion/contraction cycle of the glass. Once they get too big, the injection technique will not work, as the suction cup they use will not cover the whole thing.

I think Tom handled the technical question, so I'll jump in with help on this part.

Not sure what YOU mean by South Cali, but your first/best bet is PCA Zone 8, of which I know that both Orange County Region and San Diego Region have a lot of a/x activity. Try visiting the website for PCA (http://www.pca.org/), drill down to the zones/regions closest to you (Zone 8: http://zone8.pca.org/), most of the regions have website links to their schedule (San Diego Region: http://www.pcasdr.org/).

San Diego runs 12-14 per year in the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot. HUGE parking lot, with great elevation changes, and a great team of volunteers running it. Everyone volunteers for work, and the focus is on track time and fun. We usually drive from 9 am sharp til 4:30 or so, with a total day of 6:30 to 5:30 typically. If South Cali means you are close, get a PCA membership (if you don't already have one) and come see us on October 13!

When I lived in Palos Verdes , about 8 years ago, the local PCA did not have alot of autocrosses so I relied on the POC and SCCA for my autoX fix. Their season is reversed from the Northeast, i.e. it is just starting a new season with the hot summer weather over. I once ran an autocross at Willow Springs in July. When I got home I told my wife that I ever went to the desert to run in the summer to shoot me because I clearly forgot how bad I felt with the heat!!
