Need help in starting an event
Hi, I'm currently in charge of trying to set up an autocross event here at the University of Maryland, and I was wondering if anyone could give me assistance/advice in hooking up with the proper officials in the area and figuring out what it is I need to set up in order to have this happen.
and, of course, once it's set up, I'd like to invite everyone in the area to come to our event and compete and have a good time
(it should be cheap or free, it's a club-sponsored event, and we have a good chunk of change left over still to spend on the event, because if we dont use it we lose the funding we would get for next year. government business and all
.)
there would also be a dyno($50/2 pulls)/free food present.
oh, and our SAE Formula 1 team should be doing a demo too. a few of the 928 guys are probably coming, so if we could get more other-Rennlist members there too (for competition or just to hang out) it'd be great.
edit: keep in mind, this would be a first-time event for many people here at the club, and the majority of people (from the club here, anyway) competing would NOT have serious cars. this would be an event purely for the fun of having it at our show and getting people involved in motorsports and cars. our club is the only automotive club on-campus and we have, thus far, been successful in gaining more members than before by showing people what's out there in the world of cars as far as fun times go. bottom line: i dont need to have a national or even state-level event, i just want to know what i need to do in order to have a safe/fun (and LEGAL) time.

best bet is to get with local SCCA or NASA group to find timing equipment, then buy a whole crap-load of cones. See if your school will allow it due to liability and develop a release form. You may need to buy liablility insurance (again talk to SCCA chapter or NASA to see what they do). Good Luck.
Try the Washington DC Region and Philly Region for some events to see what is involved (both are SCCA). You might want to piggy-back on to one of their events, saving some time, money and hassle.

DC's events book out quickly, so keep an eye on when registration opens.

Philly runs a "winter" season, too.

Hey, I'd be happy to help. Unfortunately, it seems I probably know a lot less about autocross than even you do, but I've been looking to get involved and it would be nice to learn along with some other novices.
Hey,
be happy to help out as best I can, I'm a UM alum and still live in the area. I would think talking to SCCA or PCA folks that run their events would be a good start, but I know zippo about the regs and stuff.
How long has UM been doing FSAE? Nothing like that existed when I graduated ('98), at least not that I ever knew about. Would have loved to work on that sort of stuff. Hopefully you guys are better organized than the FutureCar circus I was on.

Go to http://www.pcachs.org/ and click for officers and you will see contact info for Joe Zuramski and Derek Schwarz. Chesapeake are a great bunch however they are very busy. You should also come to the Cumberland Airport and experience ours as well to see what it takes to have a first class event. Check www.nationalroadrally.com for this years schedule.

Right now I'm swamped with work and our other major meet coming up, but when everything settles down, the committee that I'm head of (auto-x/motorsports) will start trying to nail down an event, hopefully before the end of the semester.
Thanks again guys, it's great to be able to find such helpful people on these boards so readily
