Default Kumho 710's on the street

I'm looking for a dedicated AX tire for my 987S but have to drive 12 miles or so to the track. Given the usual proviso's, dry roads be carefu,l etc what do I tell the cops if I get pulled over for "bald tires" Do I cry, beg or plead ignorance and insanity?

Any advice appreciated!

you won't get too far arguing, but if you're respectful and
understanding of their concern, and if you weren't
pulled over for driving issues, you could try this:
Keep a printout of the tire specs with photo, from
the tire rack sitre, etc. It will show that the tire is
DOT approved, and that it comes that way, with the
minumum legal tread grooves and depth. This
won't help if you've already worn it slick though...

Plead whatever you want. From what I have read about the V710s is that heat is their enemy. Serious competitors using those tires would water them down on hot days. While it may not be much, the extra heat cycling caused by driving to and from would affect their wear. How is a cop truly going to notice the tread pattern when the car is at speed? I thought canadians weren't as uptight as americans

Racer- I'm as laidback as you can be in this god-forsaken country... It was minus 20F without the windchill this morning!! The reason for my paranoia is that I'll have to drive through the RCMP here in the country,then the city cops and then the M.P.'s on the military base where we have access to a shut down runway. The MP's are bored and when they see all these Porsches driving to AX they get twitchy. They often have "zero tolerance day" where they pull over everyone 1 mph over the limit (20 mph)

Joe-good advice I think thats what I'll do.

You're welcome, and it couldn't hurt to have the page of the vehicle code that describes
the number and depth of the grooves required for a DOT tire. Make sure you present
all this 'defense material' in an apologetic tone, as if their curiosity is well understood,
and that you have been asked this enough times that you collected the data to help
your explanations.

I did this in California to defend against any complaints about my driving without a
front plate. The Vehicle Code says "*IF* (my emphasis) the Department of Motor
Vehicles issues two plates, then the vehicle shall display them on the front and
back...". I have this portion of the vehicle code in my 996tt's door pocket. If I'm
questioned, I show the officer the code, and say that when I picked up my
personalized plate I asked the DMV person to only issue me the rear plate.
This is a lie of course, but the officer will never spend the time to try to check,
and I can be convincing about my telling the DMV person about there being no
mounting structure for a front plate (I filled the holes in) and that she said
'OK, but what do I do with the other plate?" and my saying that she could
put it in the metal recycling bin, etc.

Joe- that's one thing about living in Alberta, the goverment got rid of front plates years ago to save money, the other is no sales tax. But like I said it's cold and my p-car is sleeping under it's cover till spring.

Brad,

I wouldn't go with thhe V710s in your situation. These tires are extremely sensitive to heat cycles/runs, even when pampered and not driven at all on public roads. They are extremely competive for only 20 runs, and then start to fall off gradually. Driving them on the street, you will kill them way prematurally. Not to mention, they are rediculously prone to puncture because they are so soft. The best tire for autox when you have to drive to/from events on the tires is the Toyo RA-1, bar none. The RA-1 could last you a season, the V710 driven to/from, maybe four events (with performance compromised). If you get caught in the rain on the V710s, you'll be white-knuckled...the RA-1s are great in the rain.

Drew-Thanks for the advice. In a year my son will be 16 and then he can drive my truck with a second set of tires to the track. I Had originally thought of the RA-1's but could get the 710's cheaper from the Tirerack. Up here in Canada I just can't get the Toyo's in the same price range as MPSC or 710's. The other tire is Yoko A-048 which I can get very cheap here but haven't heard a lot of good feedback on them.

IMHO, for a 60 sec. autox, the V710s are worth 1-2 seconds compared to Victoracers. The downside is the 710s heat up quickly and on hot days must be sprayed between autox runs. Heat cycles degrade performance after maybe 60 autox runs, depending on who you're talking to. But they also say that after 100 runs they're still better than Victoracers or RA1s. My V710s are too new for a personal opinion on this, though.

V710s are the most popular tire among the top SCCA autocrossers in this area. So far I've never heard of a V710 cording, just getting heat cycled to death.

Any recommendations on (hot) tire pressures for the 710's???

(tire size 18x245 and 18x285)
