Default Boxster or S2K??

I realize this is a Porsche forum so my responses will probably be biased, but I want some input. I just found out that I most likely am going to be stationed at Eglin AFB in Destin, FL after I graduate, so now its time to start looking for a new car. Since I will be in sunny FL, I decided that I am going to start by looking at drop tops.

I've been autocrossing for a couple years now and have seen many S2Ks dominate BS and now compete in AS. There is not a big Porsche autocross attendance at the local SCCA events so I have never seen a Boxster in action. How do these 2 cars compare on the autoX course? I am probably going to get a base model Boxster becasue on a 2nd Lt Salary I'm not going to be able to afford a $30K car.

If you were in my position, which car would you go for??

I saw that the M030 968 is competitive again in BS.. I think one won in the national event in San Diego a week ago or so.

hi. In the norcal region, the 2liter S2000s are in BS, and the 2.2s in AS. They won
both classes in '04 here. A boxster came in third in BS. Evo 8's also do well in AS.

If you want my opinion the Boxster and S2K are both a little outmatched right now in AS (C4 has too much power). The Boxster S is outmatched in SS by the C5 (again too much power). That being said, I'd much rather have a Boxster then a C4 or C5.

I was looking at the S2000 when I bought my 968. The s2k is a great fun car to drive but was about twice as much money (obviously comparing new to used). Both the boxster ad the s2k are fairly commonly seen. Drive each and compare.

Default SCCA Reclassified Boxsters for 2005

All Boxster S were moved by SCCA to SS this year; all non-S are now in AS.

That said, I believe the Boxster to be much more enjoyable on the street, and that the biggest factors in an autocross are the driver and the tires.

Good luck!

Talking

An older Boxster will be severly outmatched by an S2K and with your budget I would reccomend the Honda hands down if you want to be a Factor in AS I love Porsche's and that is why I own a GT3 but the S2K in good hands is awesome car and depending on course and driver can take top Pax and beat SS times. I will now don My NOMEX FLAME suit

Only the 05 Boxster S was moved to SS.

The 00-04 Boxster S and the Boxster stay in AS.

The Boxster and Boxster S are underdogs in both classes.

AS belongs to the C4 vette and SS belongs to the Z06, any other stock car doesn't have a chance on those classes, assuming good driver at the wheels.

The second fastest AS car is the S2000, the Boxster doesn't turn and the caster/camber adjustment is very limited.

The second fastest SS car, no clue. But definitely not the GT3, probably the C6 vette or the Elise.

Thanks guys...

NJ-GT... are you sure only the 05 S was moved to SS?? Every list I've seen it shows all Boxster S's in SS, while all base models are AS, but i could be looking at an unofficial list or something. I dunno. I agree that both the S and base model are both underdogs in their respective classes, but they are probably more competitive than my 944 is in ES.

Completely sure.

- 05 Boxster S in SS
- Any other Boxster S and all the Boxster in AS.

Check the results on the first three 2005 National Tours on the SCCA web site. These changes were published in FastTrack at the end of 2004.
