Default R Compound on Cold days

I'm trying to decide whether it is better to Autocross with Street or R Compounds when the temperatures drop to the upper 40's to low 50s. My street are Dunlop SP8000s, and the R's are V700 Victoracers. Anybody hae experiences with R compounds on cooler/colder days?
I'm driving with a 924S.

run R's.
They will still be faster than streets.

I agree - the R's will do better if ya wanna kick Metro region butt. (Opps! Did I just say that?!?)

Just add a couple extra psi of air into each tire since the tires won't heat up as much.

Cool. I'll do my best represent NNJR, but I won't too presumptious considering I'm only a freshly graduated Rookie. I am getting faster though (or was I just having a good day). I imagine Jim will do a far better job to "Kicking butt", but I'll be happy with a solid second.

If its cold and your rivals are on Hoosiers, you will be loving life. The Victoracers have a distinct advantage on cold days. Not so when the Hoosiers get some heat in 'em, but definitely when its cold.

Not sure about rasing pressure when its cold. You will have less grip because the rubber will not be up to optimum temp, and would probably benefit from a bit less pressure to get the tire to roll over properly.

IMHO, of course.

I would add that the r-compound advantage over all season compounds goes down as the temperature goes down. I know this from experience when I compare my times (all season tires) to r-compounds. That's why I love it when it's colder, and get rather unhappy on a hot day.

My understanding is that tire pressure should be decreased in cooler weather, not added. Cooler temperature means less grip, which means the tires won't roll over as much, which in turn means less tire pressure is needed.

Vaino:

On the few winter time autocrosses I ran so far, these are my comments.

- The Hoosier gets very hard and its grip doesn't match a high performance street tire such as the GForce KD or Michelin Pilot Sport, unless you get to run it with a co-driver and then it gets grip. Mike Johnson (03 FS National Champ) ran an event on a WRX Sti (street tires) and I was on my Boxster (Hoosiers). We had a conversation about winter time and r-comp tires.

- The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup (r-comp) is absolutely undriveable in cold weather.

- The Kumho ECSTA V700 and Victoracer V700 are among the best sub 40 degrees r-comps out there.

- The winter season driving dynamics on the car are totally different. The cars tend to understeers way more. Don't get use to the car behavior on winter days, the car drives totally different on a warm day (promotes oversteer).

Is that you RD? Thank's for the input. I'm going for the Victoracer for what remains of the season. It's too early to stop Autocrossing. Definately got the bug for it. I'll post how they did on the 924S for future reference. You were right at Porscherama. Full throttle through chicane is the only way.

Marc 1xx1 - Do worry, this is just our chance to try our hand on your turf. There have been talented Metro guys over here all season. Besides, we have to make this one last all winter, and the bravado is just part of the psychological warfare.
