Default 981 gearing for Auto-x

Sorry if I didn't search deep enough, but what are people doing for gearing in the 981?

I'm looking at picking up what is going to be far from a competitive B-Street 2014 cayman base, and am just going to do the best I can with it. I'll be adding X73, or something else (can you do Koni's ? if so, does someone revalve them like proparts for Miatas?), still researching there, and might do something even higher end.

Wondering though, about the autocross set of wheels. Is that what people do for gearing? The one I'm looking at has the carrera 20's, which are beautiful, and I don't want to race on those. 18's, or 19's for tire selection, and I'm assuming, gearing.

Don't know what Street class legal rim choices you have, but coming from a 987 I am running a short 285/30R18 in the rear to help with gearing. In my case the car could have been optioned with 19x8.5 / 19x10, which allows me to run 18x8.5 / 18x10.

I believe my options are the same, if I can believe TireRack, and the bit's of research I've done for available used ones.

If X73 was an option for the base, then I would add the whole thing to start.

For shocks, consider going with a custom-valved Bilstein setup from Fat Cat Motorsports. I installed mine a few months ago and have nothing but amazing things to say about them, both for autocross and for street driving. I got mine with both the Ripple Reducer and Kerb Blow-Off features. We set the low speed damping ratio target to 0.75 to be a little more autocrossed-focused.

I was wondering this myself, and did find at least this base car which included X73. https://vinanalytics.com/car/WP0AA2A86EK173745/

Contact ProParts, they should be able to revalve any koni for you for any chassis which is street class legal. Not sure if it will be worth it on a non-competitive car, if you can get the x73 pack I’d just use those dampers first.

99% sure the x73 was available on base models, was popular on launch edition 981 and black edition.

Looks like suncoast can order the x73 from germany for $1500ish. I plan to track this as well, and focus less on absolute performance at autocrosses, and just enjoying this still amazing car.

Koni does not have a rear shock for the 981. Been there with no luck. If you want to stay in the Stock category with the factory springs and not fuss with custom built spring perches, the Bilsteins appear to be your only option.

So, what do you end up topping out at in 2nd now, and/or what speed are you at when you hit 4k rpm ? And what size are you running in front. No idea yet if the same size will fit on the 981, but I've heard 245, and maybe 255 up front with the camber maxed out?

ProParts say they can do Bilstein's. I'm picking up a set of their Koni Doubles for the G/F's miata, so I'll likely check with them, and report back here if it's possible and what they cost, if anyone is interested. While, it may not mean anything about overall cost, Fat Cat starting with a paid consultation session, sounds spendy already.

I ran it, as is, with the pretty toasty 20's on, and it was a pig. Didn't expect magic, and there was none. Went from top 10 pax (soft CAM pax) to 120's...

Not cheap but very, very good. Jeff at ProParts does great work too.

4k RPM is about 36.5 MPH. Not exactly sure where it will top out - I estimate 68 MPH. In front I have run 265/35R18 and 255/35R18. The 265 RT660 on my 8.5" rim is quite pinched. The BS winner at Nationals this year was on a 255 RE-71RS. If on factory suspension you'll certainly want front camber maxed/even but it will still be less than optimal for competition driving.

Those kits have been on back-order from Germany for the last 18 months. Unless something has changed, there is still no ship date on them.

I was told by him on two occasions that he did not want to do anything with the Bilstein B6 shocks for the 981.

Anyone happen to know if a 295/40 -18 will fit in the rear on an Apex 18x10 et 36?

Trying to juggle Tires I already have with some used ones available cheap for a potential set of 18x9, 18x10 Apex's. Falken RT660's, BTW. I'd be doing 255/30's in the front, 295/40's in the back, because I'm cheap.

Looks like it should be close to the Carrera 2, 20's other than height clearance, based on the calculator I'm looking at. 9mm more poke ?

Unfortunately, leaves the gearing the same with the 40 profile. So much for that idea.
