718 Wheels for SCCA A Street
My 2019 Cayman base is on a RORO, and I'm on the west coast, hoping to take delivery in late November or early December.
So I'm looking for wheels to put on it for AutoX, and I'm torn between two choices: HRE R1s and the HRE R104s.
They look very similar. But the R1s are 2lbs/wheel lighter in the front and 1lb/wheel lighter in the back. BUT they are about 50% more expensive.
So the question is whether the price difference to save 6lbs of unsprung weight is justified. My gut is no, but wanted to ping the folks here to see if they thought differently.
What do you think?
Thanks!
John

Logically, a lighter wheel should be faster. It should allow you to accelerate and change directions faster, and it should allow your suspension to work better. You can feel the difference when you switch to a much lighter wheel.
Having said that, lots of people have done lots of testing on the benefits of light wheels in autocross settings, and to my knowledge none have found results more significant than driver noise.
Is the extra expense worth the theoretical incremental benefit? Only you can answer that question, as only you know your own desire to be competitive and your own budget. Having said that, given that we're talking 1-2 pounds per 45+ pound corner (counting both wheels and tires), for me the answer would be a resounding no.

Drifting
I did some calculations on this a few years ago when facing a similar question. For autocross, impact of the rotational inertia is negligible for braking (the result is extra heat in the brake pads), and linear for general extra weight purposes, limited by tire grip: tire rubber coefficient of friction is not linear, so 6lbs more weight does not give 6lbs more grip, but it does give more grip and cornering potential, etc., was in the weeds. The largest impact is acceleration and I want to say it worked out to about 0.1 seconds on a typical 60 second course for 2lbs/corner (8lbs) on my 986S that I did the calcs for, but would be less impact for higher hp cars. You would be more likely to notice the extra weight on an ES miata, for example, where spinning up 2lbs of rotating mass is a larger % of total engine power.
For me, the decision came down to practicality. Lightweight wheels are more easily bent. So when I bent one of my OZs on a pothole, I replaced them with custom Forgestars that are a little heavier but I hope more robust: I daily drive these wheels and 2lbs of extra strength and structure is well worth it.

Both are excellent choices. The R101 LW's because they are the most lightweight option, the R104's because they are brand spanking new and HRE's 2nd most lightweight option while being their most affordable custom forged monoblock wheel so it offers bang for the buck.
The weight differences between the two though are a bit more than what's listed above.
If you would like more information and opinion on both these wheels feel free to send over a PM. We are HRE's largest dealer in the world so I can certainly help guide you to the right decision for yourself.

Wheel weights
Thanks for your reply.
Here are the weights that I got directly from HRE for the wheels that I am looking at:
R101
Front: 19x8.5 – 18.5lbs
Rear: 19x10.5 – 20.0lbs
RC104
Front: 19x8.5 – 20.5lbs
Rear: 19x10.5 – 21.0lbs
What weights do you show?
Thanks!
