Default Upgrading the sound system in my 944 turbo

I have a 89 944 Turbo and I would like to replace it with the newest Kenwood Excelon receiver and ugrade the door speakers to something that really has a lot of midrange and punch. Since it will be a track car I don't want the weight of a sub and big amp.

I do want a 2 channel amp for the highs, either from Focal or JL Audio

Will there be enough room to install bigger door speakers? It looks like there is only 2 inches of room between the door and the speaker grille. How have you guys gotten around this?

I have the upgraded sound system that has a 6.5 driver/3 or 4 inch mid driver/ and tweeter all in the door panel from the factory.
