Default Camera around $500

I am by no means a professional photographer - I rely on the camera being more intelligent than me. However, I think I have a good (not great) eye at taking shots.

I like my pocket camera since it can stay in the console all the time....however, I am wishing I had a nice camera for things like races, airshows, etc. I know there are some good cameras that fall into this range.

Thinks like the Canon Rebel, the new Samsung, stuff like that. 35mm cameras that can take super high res photos and enough brains to help a guy like me out.

I would get a Nikon D3000 DSLR. $550.00

I would have to revisted the Canon Rebel, I know when we were looking there were a couple key features that the Nikon had the Rebel didn't have until you got into a much more expensive camera.

I suggest you buy a preowned canon 40d or a 30d + lens. I did just that a few years back (20d back then) and its a great way to get started

Most will scoff, but if keeping in the glove box, full manual settings, 12x optical zoom and under $300 are the criteria I vote Canon Powershot SX line (I have a 200 I'm sure is outdated now).

There will never be a PnS camera that can compete directly with an SLR but $ vs $ the brand new "nice" PnS>[several generation old]SLR. I bought an older Rebel 30d last year and was very disappointed, so I sold it off for what I paid and bought the SX. One of these days when I have $2k to spend I WILL have a new 50d but that's a different ballgame (rather keep that $ for the 911 )

....most of these were taken with the SX, All of the 911 pics were.

All digital cameras are [eventually] crap. It's just a matter of time before they become relatively obsolete. You best plan is to go with a committed digital SLR, and make sure you are putting a fair share of your money into lenses- then over time you'll end up with an awesome system.... A good lens is good for a lifetime. And, you can take advantage of that planned obsolescence by buying [if you can find them] top end cameras that are 'lightly used'.

Are you looking for a hybrid PNS? I'm looking too for the wife. I know she isn't going to want to carry lenses around, and so far am deciding between Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40, Canon SX30IS, and the Nikon Coolpix P100

Not sure. I like the idea about dSLR since you can keep the lenses forever...and change the body as technology gets better.

Hybrid PNS are nice and convenient...however, when they are old...you just stop using them and nothing is reused. They do have some new hybrid styles like the Canon ELF system, however - I see these as very proprietary lenses and if they change or stop making the series...then no more lenses on newer bodies.

So for $500-600 I can still get a nice dSLR w/18-55mm lens.

Well, I was all set to get the very nice Nikon D3100....but as fate would have it, my $500 Gift card was not accepted by my local camera shop since they are idiots. Oh well, their loss.

Went to Best Buy to get it there - and make them match the price when I saw the Canon T1i. Almost exactly the same specs but with a slightly higher resolution for $50 less. So I got that camera as well as the "bundle" kit that came with a 75-300mm lens. YEAH!

Now for the GoPro HD camera!
