Default Another engine out "while you're in there" thread

Developed my second coolant leak on my 2008 TT and decided to just have my Indy drop the engine and pin the coolant lines for a permanent fix. Since I'm paying the labor to have my engine pulled, I want to make sure I take care of everything now, because I don't plan on ever doing this again. I'm going to have my spark plugs changed again even though it's been less than 2 years (and far less than the requisite mileage) and the water pump has previously been replaced as well.

What other preventative maintenance items can I knock out while my engine is out? I've got 70k miles on my car and now that I'm doing this, I plan on keeping this car for many more years.

Make sure you've got the 3 stainless coolant elbows to replace the oem factory ones and for sure all new coolant hoses.

new coolant reservoir. pretty cheap to buy one and replace and then you won't have a coolant leak because of old plastic in there.

it's hard to replace it without dropping the engine so i did mine when i got my coolant lines welded. piece of cake to replace with the engine out though.

Sounds like this simple coolant pipe job could turn into a $12k smorgasbord.

^ I'm an engine out guy and maxed out at $8K at the dealer. Including mainly the Sharkwerks elbows and new water pump.

Should we mention spark plug wires at this mileage? Did that on my 993. I see the coil on plug comment below now. Thanks.

I did this last year on my '07 with many coolant leaks and it ran $14K or so with clutch, new radiators in front, new spark plugs and many other things. The parts list was long. Well worth it for many years of problem free driving.

I believe the 'coil on plug' replaced the plug wires.

If he goes for mack-daddy 4.0 RS clutch.PP.FW and everything else it will be five figures!!!!

How much did it all cost you?

Yeah, five-figures comes up pretty rapidly, but I'm definitely trying not to spend that much if it can be avoided. I thought long and hard about whether I was going to just do the bare minimum to fix the car and then sell it, or go through the trouble of pinning the lines and doing a bunch of other preventative maintenance. This is a huge repair bill for a vehicle that I drive sparingly these days, and a tough pill to swallow. I strongly considered selling it for something like a 987 Cayman that I'd run some DEs with, or hell, even a Honda S2000 since I love that car and can do virtually all the work myself (I've had two in the past).

But, committing to do this job means I'm committing to keeping the car for the foreseeable future, and I'm good with that. It's really an awesome machine.
