Y pipe rubbing?
Need help guys! I am in the market for a turbo and the car i was checking has a y pipe that show signs of rubbing to the rubber on the behind trunk? What caused the rubbing on the top of the y pipe? Sorry im a newbie here and would really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

Is it a really small spot, near a clear vent line? Almost all I've seen have this.

Mine has a rub through the sparkly coating right at the right end connector (turbo intercooler out into the Y pipe), this appears to have been caused by the "hood" fan wiring cable rubbing against it as the engine moves around on it's mounts. I'm surprised that the Y pipe coating and not the fan wiring insulation wore through.
It's a small rub area (maybe 0.25" x 0.5") so I just covered it by putting two cable ties around the Y pipe just after the right clamp (turbo intercooler outlet) so now the fan wiring cable rubs agains the smooth cable ties and not the Y pipe.
I'll see what the dealer has to say about this when I bring it in soon for the season ending oil change.

Yeah that's not too normal.. It's hard to tell in the picture, but is the rubber hose that the Y-pipe connects to red?
It does look like it has an non-factory hose there, which may explain why it's rubbing (hose may be positioned a little different than stock, thus making the Y-pipe sit higher in the engine bay, thus the rub..)

yes, I agree with Saabin - aftermarket couplers being used for sure. They are probably bigger than the stock once and thereby pushing up the pipe and making contact on the trunk. I would do a thorough PPI on this one - someone has been wrenching on it in some form.

Mine's the same (as this picture from the previous post) with a small slight black rub spot at very right end of the y-pipe which is what I covered with two white cable ties so that the fan cable doesn't rub against the y-pipe anymore. There are no other rubs on mine.
It does look like with the aftermarket couplers the y-pipe has been raised and is rubbing against the air inlets.

I finally figure out the reason after i did the ppi. Mechanic said because the owner replaced the tubing to a silicon hose which is the red one. Its a little bit longer that's why it causes the rubbing. But he said its nothing major. He actually that is a better hose and will last longer. Is that true?

When I looked at the wire bundle in my car I think if I tie it up tight enough not to hang down near the y-pipe then there won't be enough slack in the cable to be able to fully open the "hood".

allendave29, I am sure the hoses will last forever. It will last just as long if it is shortened 1/4 inch so that the y pipe does not rub. Meanwhile, it clearly is damaging the y pipe and I am sure it is damaging the air ducting that it is rubbing on as well!
