Default QUESTION: Pulling the parking brake one notch on 997.1 tt makes it RWD?

Just heard from a friend something which may sound like a urban legend: is it true that when you pull the parking brake (just enough to close the parking brake switch, without actually braking) it dis-engages the front drive??

Initially I thought it was a bit absurd, but then I realized that technically it could be possible on a 997.1 tt as the FWD is engaged by an electro-actuated clutch (normally dis-engaged)!

...still, all of this sounds too good to be true…

Any info?

Why would this be a necessary feature? Under what conditions could someone use this? Would need to use? And with the variability of the parking brake adjustment how could Porsche know the parking brakes were not slightly dragging and and at risk of overheating?

If this is a feature -- which I seriously doubt in case it is not obvious -- it should be covered in the owners manual.

'Under what conditions could someone use this? Would need to use?'

Easy answers in order:
- Drifting!
- YESSS!!!

In a nutshell: I doubt as well all of this is real, and I agree it is not necessary.... but potentially it could be a lot of fun!!

PS: unfortunately (and often) user manuals do not cover a lot of interesting topics/tricks...
PS2: I did some drifting in the past (on low-grip track only) and the 4WD is not helping (I'm a rookie)...I think RWD would make more fun...

Sounds like the perfect excuse to buy a Mustang as a beater to me. Of course, I rarely need an excuse to buy another car.

I think this is a feature of the 997.2 not 997.1 but maybe incorrect

Haven't tried it in my 997.2 turbo yet

So your saying that somehow it electronically disengages the front drive system. I dont think it is even a remote possibility. Think about it.

...this was my first reaction as well, then I remembered that the 997.1 works as a RWD in normal conditions and the FWD kicks in only when needed thanks to an electro-actuated clutch system.
In normal conditions the car is somehow already a RWD one.

Now, if the clutch is normally open and it is closed by the car electronics only under specific conditions, it is not that difficult to imagine that the car can be transformed into a RWD animal only with electronic tricks..

Still...this is only speculations...we would really need somebody with some kind of technical competence to help... (excluding for a while a burnout/doughnuts test..)

If true, it would be nice to be able to toggle between 2 and 4WD

It is true! It works, just make sure that your handbrake does not actually engage in the first notch, but the switch engages and you get the handbrake on warning.

...how did you test it? It would be great!

Ok, it is a bit ironic, but I cannot avoid to think that Porsche used to charge a big extra money to get a 2WD version of the tt

If you pull the brake handle up 3 clicks, then down 2, then up 1, then down 2 you will activate the 4 cylinder and front wheel drive mode. To unactivate, fold the driver mirror in while slapping yourself repeatedly...

Sorry, couldn't resist...JB
