Default Intercoolers installed

I took some time off this week and decided to install my GT2RS intercoolers. I had purchased these almost a year ago but just now got around to putting them on. I had decided a while back that I wanted to a more OEM-type install, and didn’t want to use the tie-wrap solution.

Let me first say this was a lot of work, not sure I would do this again if I had to do it over.. A fellow forum member sent me some pictures of how he did it which helped greatly. I had to trim the extra “tabs” on the intercoolers so it would fit with the OEM straps. Thankfully it’s aluminum and bends fairly easily, as I took my time so as to not deform the outer row of fins.

Trimming the ducts was slow and tedious, but the pictures I got helped me get started. Definitely a more factory look, but I think I’d rather change my plugs again than do this mod over again

Got it put back together and pressure tested to 22psi using my boost leak tester.

The weather here won’t be cooperating for a few days so it’ll probably be next week before I get to drive it. I plan to schedule a session on a Dyno Dynamics AWD dyno so I can get some readings pre and post my FVD tune..

A couple of pics of the assembled coolers..

In an other thread DO88 was mentioned and looking them up I saw they have an intercooler which fits like stock but offers much more cooling.
Did you know about them ? If yes, why did you prefer the GT2's ?

Looks good! I did the same to mine, and kind of agree it was a pain in the ****. However, based on all my research, it seemed like the best bang for the buck and I like that it's a Porsche part.

I bought mine almost a year ago, and just now got around to putting them on.. I don't think the do88 ones were around then, as I just recall seeing those for the first time a few months ago. Seeing that the would require much less labor to install I probably would have tried them out if I were buying today. I guess the only downside is the do88s is lack of real world end user data (i.e. non vendor) on how they perform vs the gt2rs ones.

Yeah there is something to be said for it being a Porsche part. Agree for the price it's a good deal, and should help here in TX in the summer months..

Good job. The intercoolers actually make a huge difference all around. I put mine on last fall and did before and after runs on the same day in 50 deg weather. Intake air temps were much lower with the new coolers even on a cool day. Time to turn up the boost!

Saabin, could you please also post the pics you used as a guide for the trimming?
Thanks.

Thanks alot!
Probably gonna go at it next weekend and might as well document it too.

I don’t really mind a tiewrap solution, but it seems the overal height is increased which makes it a tight squeeze as some complained.

Is the tiewrap solution just wrapping the outside pieces together since the clips don't lineup properly? not clear. This was on my maybe list, but why can't we just get the whole thing already assembled so it's plug and play? Forgive my ignorance. I've only taken them off when removing the bumper, but never thought replacing them would be a big job. Are the GT2 IC supposed to help pump out more power? They look smaller.

You can buy 997.2 shrouds (GT2 intercoolers are the same as 997.2 intercoolers) but it is pricey, around $1200 if I recall correctly. That is why most people use their existing shrouds. The 997.2 IC's are much better the 997.1, many studies have shown the sizable improvements in IAT's. I saw a significant drop in IAT's when I datalogged my car which has a UMW tune. The only complaint is the risk of the plastic end tanks blowing off. Not really an issue unless you are running huge power levels. The IC's with metal end tanks also tend to heat soak more. It is a great mod if your car is mostly street, sometime track car. If you are running big power levels and mostly running 1/4 mile runs or 60-130 pulls it probably makes more sense to get the big fat (and more expensive) coolers like AMS.

I had a shop do these for me along with several other mods just a couple months ago. Like noted above I prefer factory/OEM parts when possible and these are economical as Porsche parts go. (Interesting observation was that my stock .1 coolers were made in Germany but the .2 replacements made in Portugal.)

My TT is purely a street car. I have noticed zero heat soak subjectively (butt dyno) since then but haven't been back to the real dyno yet or data logged. Soon. Unfortunately there won't be a way for me to get true before/after HP numbers just from the intercoolers because of the other changes. I would hope and expect to see much less variation (drop) between 3 consecutive dyno pulls with these I/Cs.

Very happy with the overall result and am not planning any other powertrain mods on this car.
