Gosh how common is this Spun Camshaft issues on all 997.1/2? And is there a preventative solution to this?

Sheesh this original thread is over 6 years old now.

Ed, I would hay that its 'uncommon'.. I would not say rare.

There really is nothing you can do.... ok, maybe never drive it aggressively, but that's probably just my thoughts not based on any actual data..

The preventative action is to get the cams pinned before they spin. It's and engine out. partial engine disassembly deal. If you haven't pinned the coolant lines or done any other coolant work, timing it with that lessens the cost impact of pinning just the cams.

It's enough of an issue that I'd tell anybody looking at a .1 to figure it will need to be done at some point, and to do the coolant lines and a bunch of other stuff at the same time.

Long thread but If you're starting at the end let me save you some time:
  • The spun camshaft issue is not common.
  • There is no need to preventatively fix this issue - if it happens to you, get your cams pinned and if not, don't lose any sleep over it.
It seems that coolant fitting failures are far more common than this problem after years of owning Mezger turbos and spending far too much time on 996T and 997T forums.

What’s the usual cost to get the cams pinned? Thx
