That being said...it's so NOT a Porsche. It has no gravitas; no cojones; it lacks character and resembles a melted bar of soap. Where are those wide hips? Even the turbo and 4s lack them...The 997 looks like a grown-up, tougher 993, which was arguably the best-looking 911. The 996? Not so much...

The 996 is the version of the 911 that you wish never happened, like the last episode of Seinfeld. It was obviously made when things weren't so hot for Porsche and parts had to be shared with the then-new Boxster. It was a version of badge-engineering that GM was rightly condemned for. Sure, it might drive well--but if there's no passion when walking up to it, pass.
Minus the headlamps & tail lights the 996 looks almost identical.

Any of you who agree with the notion that 996TT's have "no cojones" are welcome to drive my modded 02' X50. It's 560hp at the wheels (well over 600hp at crankshaft) will change your perception. Fast. The look of guys driving GT3RS's, GT2's, even a McLaren MP4-12C at COTA as I lapped them in a 13y/o car. Priceless.

Headlamps. Please!!!

well, first, I don't recall anyone calling the 996TT slow.

second, great, you have a modified 911 turbo, and its fast. I could modify a ford focus to pass GT2s on the track, so what?

why so defensive? Its a car, not your child.

I have a 997tt and I came very very close to a 996tt but ultimately fell in love with the front end and interior of the 997. There are a lot of improvements in the 997 over the 996 that are worth the price difference. That being said, you can make a 996 way better than a stock 997 for the same money. For the price, the 996 is a much much better buy for the performance you get.
In my opinion the rear of the 996tt is sexier than the 997tt but looks are always subjective.

All that aside, what always gets me is not the people that compare and criticize one vs other because of looks, performance, etc. Is the people that buy cars and get all butt hurt and concern about their resale value. IS A F$..ING CAR PEOPLE. And not only that but a USED one too. If you are that concern about resale value, then you can't afford to own one. Go and lease a Audi and in 4 years u got nothing to worry about.

rant over.

FWIW I always liked the door arm rests and swooping styling on the 996 better than the 997

Leasing is one of the biggest waste of money there is unless its a write off. I agree that resale value shouldn't be a concern as these types of cars are wants not needs that should be bought with disposable income. Just my 2 cents lol.

I know we all brush off depreciation ... but to be honest, it always in the back of my mind... Its not about the money, I just don't like throwing cash out the window if I can avoid it ... And if we truly didn't care about depreciation we would all be buying brand new cars ..

Anyway, 996TT is a cool car - so is the 997TT ... I would have no problem owning either ...

some of us (i) have little else to do, and enjoy a good argument. but it's hard to argue the 997 turbo isn't "better" looking at least for me. i think the lines are much smoother than the 996t.

i don't see anyone being "upset" but i do think it's weird to disparage a guys choice of car, when comparing 996 to 997, particularly when they are SO closely related

but the pics DO tell the tale for me. nothing like side by sides to make a good case. but no one argues the 997's are not more genteel lol

I don't really understand the term "butt hurt".

Getting your feelings hurt is equivalent to your butt hurting? This seems odd to me.

Maybe I'm getting old...

Edit: I looked it up. It still seems like an odd term to me.

Come now, show me where I disparaged anyone for their choice of car? I'm pretty sure I said if you like the car that's all that matters.

Both the 996TS and 997T are great cars. The only argument that I've found here that one is better than the other which isn't subjective and aesthetically related, is that the 997T is a faster/better stock car and the 996T is a faster/better modded car.

In my opinion neither car would win a beauty contest based on its face, but I think both look good.

The 997T looks a bit like a squished wide kermit the frog face:

And while I like the 996 headlights better and think they fit the lines of the car more than the round ones, the front bumper is a bit bland and plasticy:

At the end of the day, they're both very special cars and have their own place in 911 history.

To the OP, buy the car that you fall in love with when you see it, drive it, and FEEL it, you don't buy a car like this for practical reasons. My suggestion would be to buy that the car that FEELS best to you and you can justify financially.
