For the money, I'm pleased with my purchase and don't really think the differences justify the price differential. I'm just sayin...
Damnnn!! Now that's one for the books. What a steal.

The previous owner passed away after owning it for 3 months. His wife kept it in the garage for 12 years, then traded it in. They replaced the seats, all the fuel related items, put new tires on it, full tune up, new filters, etc. Looks brand new. I'll do an intro on the 996 turbo forum shortly with pics.

A simple rule I live by:

Buy the best, newest 911 you can afford. The car evolves.

Buy the best car you can afford. That being said, I bought a 997TTS for my 20k/year DD after driving several other cars, including a 996TT and 007 GT3RS.

If you let go on the looks, upgrade the 996 with suspension, flash and maybe exhaust and consider the money spend, 996TT is a no brainer for a driver oriented to aggressive driving style. Wonderful, wonderful car. More engaging than 997TT and more rewarding. When 911s evolve they loose something by every generation. If you have a budget, 996TT. If you have no budget, then have them both. 996 spills race heritage, 997 spills luxury. However, Porsche does it right, every generation is faster than previous. We have come to the point where faster is not better. It is the enjoyment of driving a responsive car that counts. 996TT will provide that with full scale. That being said, I dont regrett trading for newer.

I have always had strange feelings towards people who cannot enjoy driving the car if they dont like the appearance of the vehicle, no matter how awesome machine it is. I understand the car is like clothes, you want to look good in it. But if the clothes do not make you warm and protect you from elements, they are useless no matter how good they look. If a sports car does not make you scream when you floor it on twisties, it is useless no matter how good it looks. 996 will do that as well as 997.

I don't like them at all, sorry. Any 996 iteration except the GT2.

The rarity of a 996tts gives it more cachet than a 997tt[s] will ever have.

The choice will have to depend on whether the extent of "special" matters more than newer/improved for the OPs use case. The 997 is an evolution of the 996 there's nothing obvious that's "better" about the 996, though at some point the styling may look more interesting again, probably around the time when we forget that the headlights looked a little like the contemporary boxster.

just my personal opinion, but all else equal, I'd pay a premium every time for a 997 TT, it's just so much nicer looking IMO

I always thought the look of the 996 would "mature" over time, but that doesnt appear to be the case; its just too polarizing for most. If you can get over the front end then it is an incredible bargain. For me though, I would take the 997 everyday, even if it meant saving up a little longer to fit within your budget. The 997 has such a timeless appearance; it is one model that has aged extremely well and still looks relevant, whereas the 996 looks dated.

The 996 is a but-her-face, stuck between the sexier older sister (993) and prettier younger sister (997). She'll be the last one asked to the dance every time.
