09 997 Turbo odd "slipping" issue
#31
Just had mine replaced in September. I felt the slippage but figured can ride out the season. Boy was I wrong.......
Clutch went on me on a secondary road about 60 miles from home.
Went from slippage to catastrophic failure in about 10 days.
In my opinion the warning period is very short. Now I know.
Because I waited so long there was much collateral damage.
That was an $8000 lesson after some negotiating with dealer. It's a wear and tear component, so no coverage, guess it's just the cost of having fun with my car.
I went everything back to stock. I figure it's better in the long run to stay with original setup. I do have a tune but figure I'll be good for a long time now. Good luck to you with the repair.

I bought my CPO car in Dec and first noticed the clutch issue in early Feb so the car was recently purchased. I'd only driven it a thousand miles os so. I think I could have held firm and convinced them to cover the entire repair. Of course their first reaction was to point out that it wasn't covered under the CPO (the clutch is a wear and tear item, like brakes) and to point out it was an expensive repair, as I was fully aware. My desire though was to stay away from another stock clutch for the reasons amply explained in this thread. I have a FVD turn for the car which I still haven't installed, but I'm itching to do so. Particularly with a tune the stock clutch isn't up to the task. I also knew the dealer wouldn't be interested in installing an aftermarket clutch at their expense. So I made them this offer, they cover the labor and I'd cover the parts. They liked this and said yes. I then told them that I wanted to provide a Sachs 2.5 as the replacement part. There is an issue here, as they lose the profit from selling you their part. Keep in mind though I'm negotiating with the sales dept, they really don't care about the parts dept losing money they just want to protect their bottom line. A complete Sachs 2.5 kit from Berk cost me $1638 delivered to my door, so it was really wroth it to me to have the sturdier replacement for that small investment.

well i too noticed today the same issue the rest of you where having
it was about 50 degrees out at night here in LA and after I let the car warm up a bit I was in 4th and I gunned it and it shot from about 3000rpm to 7000rpm but didn't move forward much
gonna look into the sachs 2.5 clutch. my car has 29k miles and is all stock except for a cobb stage 1 tune and fabspeed intake

Digging up the past
Mine did the same thing a few months ago, slipped in 4th - 6th at low RPM's while pressing the accelerator (no down shifting) , have basically the same mods as you (fabspeed exhaust, headers & tune). Upgraded to stronger pressure plate & gt2 clutch disk in my 997 turbo. Which I think is what they call the sachs 2.5. Everything is peachy again ($3k later

Must be something going around. On Sunday leaving the gas station, on it hard it slipped in 1st gear up to redline. I immediately thought I broke traction, but the car is AWD, the roads were dry, no tire screeching, and the car didn't wiggle a bit (in a slight turn). Had to be the clutch. 25k mile with what I would guess is the original clutch. I'll play nice for a while until I can research a DIY clutch job. Anyone here know of a good DIY tutorial?

Wow. Old thread. If anyone has a COBB AP, you can log while doing a pull. Once the data is captured you can graph RPM. A slipping clutch will look something like this:
RE: DIY; No easy way around it. I took my engine out to replace mine. It IS possible to do it with the engine IN the car and just removing the transmission, but lining the release bearing fork up with the pin, and inserting the pin without spewing needle bearings everywhere is a tough ordeal with limited space to work.
I pieced my stage 2.5 clutch kit together. The friction disc isn't what generally fails with power adders and a tune, it's the pressure plates ability to clamp.. or lack thereof.

here is sachs 2.5 clutch kit assembled by me for about $1300 but i bet you can find it even cheaper if you look harder and get it closer to $1k

09 997.1 Turbo "slipping" issue.
2009 997.1 Replaced clutch at 35K along with flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing, slave cylinder, etc. Expect 70K may require another clutch job. The high torque of the Mezger engine and my driving style puts a high demand on the clutch. The joy of driving is why drivers prefer 6-speed manual over Tiptronic automatic transmissions for 997.1 Turbos.
When the first "slipping" happens, you will know it is time for a new clutch!

Question for the group. How long can I drive the car before changing the clutch, if I just cruise around? It has only slipped once and I haven’t driven since. Will it explode and leave me stranded? Or if I baby it will it prolong it’s already short life.
The reason I ask is I would really like to DIY this clutch repair. I just finished building a work shop but do not yet have a lift. Need some time to complete other projects before installing lift, etc. I would like to enjoy the car if I can, even if it means no boost check for a while
I only use it for local sunny day drives.
