Heard an interview with the driver. Gas spilled, he tried to squeegy it off the side of his car and ended up pushing gas up on to the exhaust.

3 engineers from Germany were flown out to evaluate the situation.

^I did not think that gasoline on hot exhaust could combust without some sort of a spark? Unless red hot, which I doubt that would have been the case with this car being street driven?

Either way this is a terrible fail mode!

Gasoline will autoignite at a temperature around 440º F if I remember right. Potentially plausible on such a short exhaust if the cats were hot.
