Default A/C question

Hey guys today was driving my badass machine and as usual I was just babying it but I decided to nail it and enjoy some g forces. After a fairly hard acceleration my air conditioning blower went to about half. In other words the air coming out of the vents dropped off dramatically but was still blowing and still cold, just not as hard. Even though I didn't touch the controls. Is that something I should have Porsche investigate?? Kinda odd. I played with the controls and it seemed to work fine after that but now im not sure if its blowing as hard as it should.

Along the same lines, I've always wondered if I need to hit the "Eco" button before driving the car hard, or if it automatically cuts off the A/C compressor at a certain RPM. I know I've read in the past that spinning A/C compressors to high RPMs isn't the best for them.

The DME will disable/disengage (or in the case of the auto climate variable displacement version just set its displacement to 'zero') the A/C under high torque demand conditions. There is no real worry the A/C compressor will come apart at high rpms any more than there is any real worry the water pump or the power steering pump will come apart at high rpms.

To the OP, are you sure you didn't have the AC on auto and it just slowed the blower down coincidentally at the same time you accelerated? Occam's razor--proceed with the simpler theory until simplicity can be traded for greater explanatory power.

Hmmm thanks for the responses guys. I do not think I had it on Auto it stays a constant flow all the time whatever I have the fan speed set to. But this almost struck me as something that was meant to happen so maybe it was some sort of auto reduction feature under hard engine loads. It did happen after I had already slowed down right after the brief acceleration. Ill keep my eyes on it. Nice to know I still have a year on the warranty just in case.

Do you think that something like that would throw some sort of code???

The SAE (hp/torque) ratings on all engines are run with A/C compressor (clutch) off, so since the 80's most engine ECUs disengage unnecessary accessories such as A/C clutch during WOT accels. This gives your full power without the parasitic losses of an A/C clutch (15 hp draw?)

The assumption is that the accels are short duration (less than 20 sec?) and your A/C condenser remains cool enough to continue to blow cold air with the A/C disengaged but the fan blower going...of course, to protect the life of the A/C clutch the ECU waits so many seconds after WOT before it reengages it in order to avoid a "cycling"...

A drop in voltage or a change in the position of the vent doors can create what you observed, however you noted everything was fine afterwards so I would put the issue on the back shelf for now.
