I just drove the new Carrera 4, 4S Cayman S and Cayman on a small portion of the Fontana race track. To say I was dissapointed in the 991 is an understatement. You know what the best car is hands down? The Cayman S. By far more fun to drive.. Faster and more responsive PDK.. The Carrera is under powered.

So to answer your question. I'm not sure WTF Porsche is doing..

I tracked all the models yesterday during Porsce World Show. I found most of the 911's to be spectacular.
Especially the S and 4S, nothing could disturb them.
Exceptional performance, incredible handling and a blast to drive hard. These cars are beat day after day on the track and show no signs of it. I love my 6 spd, but the PDK is a beast on the track, incredibly intuitive and never leaves you doubting.
By no means are the cars any less of a Sportscar then prior models. The new Cayman is an awesome ride as well, but I found the base 911 to be much more solid and confident on the track.

In fairness to Porsche and Business, they build SUVs and sedans to make money.

The cayman and boxster are the best they have ever looked, fun to drive and are more affordable then the 911 to allow those on smaller budgets to enjoy the brand.

the 991 has joined the ranks of other GT coupes and are a more practical daily car with a just a hint of sport car DNA obtained fom the Cup car program which is one of the strongest run of race cars in the history of race car production.

The new 991 turbo and GT3 with the soon to be seen RS are for sure sporting cars though perhaps not a super profitable production run like that of the other models in the roster but at least they offer them to keep respect to the brand.... Nice!

With the 918 and pehaps the production of the 961, id say they are still in the sport car game. deep.

Now, if they only would build a new boxster spyder with a 991S engine.... that would be sport car building in my world. Gimmie one

(Would like them to build a 2700 pound GT3 powered Cayman, but alas that is just crazy talk.)

IMO:
I just want a manual in the TT, GT2, GT3, etc...until then...I can't get excited.
...Cayennes, sedans, hybrids, diesels are great and I am happy for Porsche and I own some, but they are not core! Give me the steak first and then let's talk about the desert and the other stuff!

My 993 and 997 are manuals. Without them at my disposal I cannot see how owning just one Porsche in 991 trim with PDK would do it for me.....

Sux if you can only have just one car when in the market for new.

Having had a 06 Cayenne S for 3 years, after a string of SUV's over the years, i have to say that when you buried your right foot it was fun. But during the winter, i dream of a clear day to take out the TT !

I was at the Porsche dealer the other day looking around. New Cayman $90,000 dollars, Convertible 991 with ducktail. 150,000 dollars. Thats farking INSANE!!

I did the same show.. I thought the 991 (both 4 and 4S) were boring.. Precise but boring. The cars we drove were brand new. Underpowered for a new model and I didn't like the powerband. The Cayman S was much more fun.. The base Cayman was a dog. I hope they do a much better job on the TT and the GT3. Now the GT3 is going to be awesome...

Just my opinion. And I have lots of them. My TT is way more fun than the 991.

It doesn't get any better, it's an expensive club to join.
Avoid the early depreciation - buy used.

90k Cayman must come with a purple unicorn. Starts at 63k for the S....

On that note... I was just at Porsche of Arlington VA the other day and I have never been to such a disgusting car dealership. This place isn't even up to Honda standards.

Yea sure but if you want a steering wheel and rear view mirrors it will be more like 85000. Do you ever read articles about 944's and you think holy crap somebody actually paid 48000 dollars for this thing in 1988, that's how well view the Cayman in 10 years when you can get one for 9000 dollars.
