Default Mobil 1 question

When I order mobile 1 0w-40 for my car is there a special kind or do I just order plain old Mobile 1 0w-40???

I'd ask your dealer for the list of grades. I'm now using the next weight up from the 0W which tended to burn off. Originally whatever oil Porsche supplied in the car from the factory didn't burn anything over the 7000.. Once the first oil change occurred at 7000 using the mobil 1 0W the car started burning at @1 litre every 1000 or so.

I mentioned this to the dealer and they did some investigations into it and the next oil change, changed to the next weight up and now it barely uses a drop again. I can check with my dealer on Monday and ask again the exact spec/weight of the oil. It is mobil 1 though. Cheers.

PS the 0W is very light, like sewing machine oil. This is behind a lot of the oil consumption problems....and nothing to do with rings, running in BS and the likes. I did a lot of research into this as well with the oil companies and component manufacturers. A lot of it also depends upon your operating conditions and climate, hence why Porsche has a range of oil grades to choose from.

Be sure the oil bottles, every one, has an "A40" on the label. This shows the oil is Porsche approved for use in its sports cars.

What does it mean (mechanically speaking) and is it good or bad?

Wish I knew. Proper break in maybe.

My experience with the last 2 and this Porsche is that they burn more in the first 10K miles, then settle down.

The 993 settled down to 1 qt per 3K miles till the top end rebuild at 120K, then got better to 1/5K until I sold it at 161K.

That means Terry is using far less oil than Porsche's acceptable specification.

Use the heavier weight that Paul (Speed 21) is talking about.. 5-40.. Your engine will run quieter and it wont burn as much oil. If you're in a very hot climate you can use the 10-40. Castrol full syth is good or whatever oil you like (Porsche approved of course.)

I am trying to gather info on millers nano technology oil. UK company, have read some amazing things. Just fyi and material to look out for.

Also, I recall reading that Mobil 1 markets a 0-40 turbo diesel variant which could be worth looking into.

Well from what Ive read the 5w-40 (5w for winter) may be a little to thick at start up to properly lube. And once the engine is at operating temp its just like any other 40 weight oil. What do you think about that??

Whats the advantage of the Diesel oil?? Ive read some posts of guys liking it because it doesnt have to meet certain regulations or somthing.

Agree Nick.. I know of many Porsche techs who highly recommend the turbo deisel formula. Apparently the formulation is much more like the original Mobil one before they changed it..

Jerry You're correct.. The heavier grades should be used in warmer climates (Cali, Fla, AZ etc)

That's what I have heard as well.. Apparently Mobil One changed it"s formulation becuse of enviromental law changes.. Anything labeled "deisel" does not have to complywith these rules. That's what I have heard anyway. I could be wrong..
