Default 997.2TT SuperSprint's Exhaust Research and Development | + 50hp

SuperSprint SpA recently got their hands on a brand new 997TTS for exhaust development. Here is a gallery of the major steps in R&D'ing a SuperSprint full exhaust system for a P-Car to make 50hp over a stock 997.2TTS !

About SuperSprint

Supersprint inc. was formed in 1955 with the objective of designing and building the highest quality exhaust systems in the world. That objective has been the driving force behind each supersprint product from the first system built to those being developed for the future. When you purchase a supersprint product you can be assured it is the highest quality available.

Every supersprint system has been researched, designed and tested to insure additional power and to enhance overall performance. All design is validated by extensive testing which includes hours of dyno testing on supersprint's maha 4-wheel chassis dynamometer. In fact no other exhaust manufacturer, race team engine testing department or car manufacturer has the performance evaluating experience of supersprint.

The engineers at supersprint realize that for maximum performance, exhaust development must begin at the exhaust ports of the cylinder head. This is why supersprint has the largest variety of racing header systems in the world today. Each header incorporates cnc laser cut port matched flanges. Primary tubes are mandrel bent using the latest cnc tube bending equipment. With special tooling supersprint has been able to keep weld joints to a minimum for added reliability.

After hundreds of hours researching and developing multiple variations and combinations of exhaust systems, SuperSprint released 3 different configurations:

1. Modular exhaust system - 65mm diameter "Sound"

Each components of the kit was designed to work with the OE exhaust. I.E. you can fit the rear mufflers only for added sound, or the cat-back only with OE tips, and so. This is the most affordable exhaust solution from SuperSprint.

2. RACE exhaust system - 70mm diameter "Ultimate performance"

This kit was designed for optimal performance gains. We achieved 50whp on the MAHA dyno with the full catted system. The headers are optional.

3. SPORT exhaust system - 70mm diameter "Sound and performance

This kit was designed for great performance gains and no drone. The headers are optional.

MAHA AWD Dyno time!

OEM - Stock dyno

We considered the non corrected values as the dyno was overcorrecting. Also, the power figures are a lot lower thant the claimed 530 hp, this is caused by the ECU not allowing the full turbo boost on the dyno.

Stock vs Rear racing exhaust with cats. Notice the amazing top end gains. The SuperSprint racing system really allows the TTS to breath up on top! 26whp gains - no tune.

Stock vs FULL system with cats.

Close to 50whp total gains. - NO TUNE!

R&D notes on piping diameter

Supersprint have a lot of experience on the Porsche turbo engine, since the first air cooled versions.

The equal length manifold is the result of extensive research, the necessity to keep the pipes short to maintain the highest exhaust gas energy but at the same time to allow the turbo to work on the highest pressure differential was the keystone of the research process.

The car has been at the R&D department for a whole month, and all the possible configurations have been tested and approved or discarded depending on the results on the dyno. Around 30 runs have been done to ensure the reliability of the results and the progressive increase in performance for every component added to the system, starting from the rear exhaust only, then the cats and finally with the headers. Different rear exhaust, cats and manifold have been testes as well. The final products are the approved ones...this trial & error process is very expensive!

Here are all the charts of the approved components. Mind that the car resulted in less hp than claimed on the dyno. We used the dyno procedures that Porsche itself deem as correct but didn't manage to come closer to the claimed figures. The car feel faster on the road than the figures suggest, the high torque may be a factor.

Stock:

Stock vs 65mm rear exhaust only
It's evident that the stock system is restrictive.

Stock vs 65mm rear exhaust with 200 CPSI cats

From this a dip in the curve emerged, so we tested the 70mm rear exhaust, which also sounds deeper and more aggressive. In real life driving is very hard to spot the difference, as the better sound of the 70 mm exhaust plays a big role. The dip was removed but the torque at low rpm was a bit lower.

Full catted 70mm system vs stock

Full catted 70mm system vs catted 65mm rear exhaust

The results are that the the full system lose a bit of low end torque compared to the cats+ 65mm rear exhaust configuration, but the middle and high end punch is improved.

The delivery is extremely linear and doesn't need any ECU modifications, but obviously it will allow more room of improvement in case of a remap.
