Default 991S vs. 997.1 Turbo

Guys - I have been struggling to make a decision between 991S and 997.1 Turbo. This is going to be 1st P car and a daily driver. I like the newness and lightness of 911S (only ~3075 lb. vs. 3700 lb.). For the 997.1 turbo I like the mezger engine and 480 hp. They are close enough in price i.e. difference maybe around $10K. What makes sense? Keen to make a good decision in favor of the car that I will enjoy the most. I like to keep my cars for a long time. Any advice would be much appreciated.

600 pound difference doesn't sound correct.
991S w/ PDK weighs 3,159 lbs
997S w/PDK weighs 3,208
997.1TT weighs about 3,500 lbs

Most,if not all the weight difference is the AWD hardware in the TT.

First P car, daily driver, I would probably opt for a 991s. What are you coming out of?
I've owned a few 997"s before moving up to the Turbo and could appreciate the differences. From what I've read the 991 is pretty fast and may give you the power you want. Although I'll tell you the Turbo rush is pretty special...Drive them both and decide, you can't make a bad decision either way

For first Porsche I'd prefer a Carrera S. The front end should feel lighter and overall I'd think it would feel just a little more nimble. However I do think the turbo's extra 70 or 80 hp will probably make up the difference in weight, at least as far as straight line acceleration goes.

First Porsche- & I sold many for a number of years to first time Porsche buyers that were considering a Turbo. Most if not all within a year were in a Turbo. Myself- bought a mint 05 997 in 09 sold in 2010 +4k and got a 07 TT CPO with 17k miles. 6mt.

I love my turbo- Stage 2 FVD tuned 555 hP/550 tq its great. I love the AWD - owned sports cars starting with 99 e36 m3, 01 c5 vette, 03 M3 (keeper) -

The stock turbo is an amazing road machine- I wasn't considering the "new" model at the time of purchase as it wasn't on the table. If this was the previous gen- I'd say pass on the 996 TT and get a 997S > in this case I say get a 997 TT and pass on a 991S.

Your getting a lot more car for the money with long-term potential for upgrades and solid reliability. Personally, I'd get a 09 TT with the upgraded Nav or PDK your choice. I personally pass on tip with PDK available if i couldn't have a manual.

.0244 cents

As soon to be on my own -" in the business" - again I'll say the depreciation on the TT has been hit on the 07-09 range. You can enter and expect for a couple of yrs to maybe lose 7-8k per yr.

Driving off a 991S using my rule of thumb I came up with- You pay list its worth wholesale instantly or within 6 mo. 12-15k from MSRP to invoice plus 7-8k per model yr. That's 19-23k off new and gives a dealer enough room to add back a few k and still sell new one's and create the used niche.

Your looking for a keeper so that doesn't matter> I just like what I own not dipping as soon as I buy regardless if I'm keeping it forever and even more importantly thinking of it> I'm keeping it forever so give me the best value...but I'm a Buffett dog "Price is what you pay. Value is what you get."

Love to convince ppl that the Turbo is by far the best automotive purchase of your entire life.

Good luck & happy hunting!

I prefer to have the AWD feel entering corners vs the RWD feel on public roads. Love the feel of the grip the AWD provides.

Plus, it is by far and away faster than the 991S. Period.

So true... Started with a 997 C4S... moved on to a turbo (both used). The amount lost from the C4S price is what I know call "tuition" and I have learnt that lesson, so as the Saint above, I have to preach the gospel. If they are keepers, just get the TT... Otherwise, you will love the S so much, and will want to step up. And you will, to a 991T when they are available, losing several tens of thousands... However, getting a 997TT now, is likely to keep you happy even after the 991T comes out, because it is a very competent and powerful automobile, and you will convince yourself its a classic!

Whatever you end up doing, enjoy and keep us posted!

Had both at the same time. Both great cars I like my 991 better but it will get traded for a 991 turbo. I think the 991 is a better daily driver but you won't be unhappy with a turbo.

The TT is king. My previous car was a 997S and as good as it was it was unfortunately not as competant as it needed to be to contend with many of todays performance vehicle's now on our roads. As good as a 991S is, it's simply unable to match the usable torque and incredible acceleration of the Turbo. Tuned it only becomes even more devastating for any contenders. Yep, it is a real problem solver . The only problem is, once you've owned one how do you go back?
