997.2 was introduced as a 2010 with a DFI engine and a wet sump..better at fuel consumption
997.1 had the race proven Metzger engine with a dry sump. best for aftermarket modifications

997.1 == 480 BHP
997.2 == 500 BHP
Of course all in stock form. As mentioned above the big advantage in the 997.1 is the race proven Metzger, GT1, engine.
Depends on what your motives are but if you like to shift and are not too interested in the fancy automatic transmissions then you might as well get a well kept 997.1 and update it as you like. I.E. like the newer rear bumper with the newer model brake lights.
If you are like me and know you will want what is new then just wait for the next generation. I'm going to get a plain-jane 991 when it comes out and then update it when the Turbos arrive. My better half doesn't want me to get a used car, otherwise I would probably have any number of 911s that fancied my desire. Lately I've been lusting over the 993 Turbo S but I don't think that will happen any time soon.
