Default 997 TT Shanghai'd by Chinese Customs

I am moving to Shanghai in June. I inquired to Chinese customs about bringing my 997 TT. They told me the customs duty alone would be 3X the value of the car!

Wow...was just in Shanghai last week and quite frankly, I don't know if you'd want to drive there Napoli as the traffic is murderous.

It is one beautiful city though - and man, the action is intoxicating....particularly on the "Bund". I would love to get an assignment there for a couple of years - if I was single and twenty years younger of course.

Well, I didn't inquire any further as to what value they would assess on the car. If your estimate is correct, throw in the original cost of the car and the total cost would be about $450,000.

Time to sell.

Yes, we've been advised not to drive at all. We'll be driven everywhere. Doesn't do much to ease my PSA (Porsche Separation Anxiety), though. We'll be there for 3 years.

You can buy a new one in China for about 335K USD. One of my friends works for Porsche here in Shanghai, maybe he can get you a small discount. Form an orderly line please!

Haha. Won't be standing in that line.

Speaking of orderly lines (and big discounts): For any locals who might interested in this clean machine, I'll be at the coffee and cars (or whatever it's called) tomorrow morning @ Brier Creek. My car will be the one w/ the for sale signs on it.

Naw go ahead and sell it then. I see your point. If you won't be around for three years enjoying it; while it's sits in the USA depreciating. What is the point in that? You need to capiltalize on your investment as soon as possible! And if you ain't driving you ain't capitalizing.

Napoli, I'm not sure if they have this permit but most countries do. You can import it there for the 3yrs then export it when u leave which saves you from the full duties. Otherwise, the local car dealers will know what to do.

But for all the hassle, you may just want to buy a local unit. The road conditions except the city centres are not best for sports cars but there are a lot of beautiful places to visit. Ah, u might even want a driver for all the jams & convenience!
