Default Drove an '09 Turbo today

Took it out solo. The car was very green, only 20 miles on it. I believe I was the first to drive it.

I did not exceed 4000 rpm. Was very hard, but I did not want to abuse it. My question is...just how big is the turbo whollup between 4-7K rpm? How much of the real turbo experience did I miss?

I remember the frustration of driving my turbo for the break in miles....once you can let it rip, you will understand the incredible effortless accelerative properties of the turbo.

At 500 miles, I am still in that frustration period! Itching to get to WOT!

Think about this: From 40-60 mph in 2nd gear in 1 second. That's what you're missing (and more).

*Just broke mine in last week.

My first time at WOT, after careful break in, it was shocking how fast the TT was in the first 2 gears. I hit the rev limiter twice! You have to be really aware how fast the revs build up and anticipate the shift. Its pretty violent but freaking insane at the same time!

By the time you get down here, it will be broken in. Anytime, my friend, come on down and I'll hand you the keys! If I sit in the passenger seat, I'll be sure to wear Depends!

I always have a lot of respect for people who treat cars well during test drives so kudos to you. That said, the TT is ready to go out of the factory. I modified mine with 200 miles and considered it broken in by 500 miles. The difference between the first 200 miles and those after 500 miles were nothing short of amazing.

The 997TT is a bit of a different experience from the turbo Audi's I had previously owned. With Audi, the turbos spooled with increased RPM's almost irrespective of throttle input. With the 997TT, the turbo spool is far more dependent on throttle input. If you are gentle with the throttle, the car has a near naturally aspirated feel all the way to redline. If you apply 3/4 or more throttle, you get this monster turbo boost.

So you should just go buy the car you test drove.

Try accelerating in 4th through 6th gear up to 4200 rpm....the turbo REALLY pulls versus the 997S.
As others have said, it's at about 4000 where the car goes like stink. Don't forget about the sport button so your butt can feel those extra 2 psi.

Went back today and gave it another drive. Sales gal actually asked me to tap into the power a little more, so I did. Did quite a few 3rd gear roll-ons up to 5K rpm. Definitely puts a smile on your face.

Am a bit surprised at the turbo lag. I thought it would be less.

Overall, a great car. Time to do some thinking over a few glasses of wine.

I think that everyone who has driven or owned one has commented that turbo lag has not been eliminated in spite of having twin turbos and variable vane technology.

The turbo lag is definitely present. The 997TT is a somewhat of a Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde experience with and without boost. If you are willing to mod, an exhaust and flash alone will help reduce the lag significantly and it really turns the car into a monster.

As you are drinking the wine, just think about how much you will be helping your dealer and the economy if you get the car. Good luck.

Just after the 2500 mile break-in ended, I remember the first launch in "Sport". Boost gauge read 16 lbs and what a blur of scenery in my peripheral vision!

From my perspective the lag is relative. If your racing then maybe, but driving around ........what lag just blur and "oh my god" closing speed
