New test report: steel vs ceramic

New test report: steel vs ceramic
When I was about to cough up $8.8K for ceramics, I checked the porsche mag-literature, Porsche racing school reps and dealer techs.....the conclusion was that the stopping distance of steel was equal to the stopping distance of ceramics. For the street, stopping distance was critical and all that really concerned me...I wanted the brakes that stopped in the shortest distance for street safety.
In the latest issue of R&T (Apr/08), braking comparion of a '08 CarreraS (steel) was made with a GT3RS (ceramic). They report braking distance 60-0 m.h CarreraS (steel) 111ft vs. GT3RS (ceramic) 115ft, and then from 80-0, CaS 193 ft and GT3RS 201 ft.
The article says that "the few feet longer for PCCBs is perhaps due to not reaching their most effective operating temperature."
Wonder what that statement means under around town driving where often brakes may never reach "PCCB's most effective operating temperature."

1. Not very scientific to compare a GT3RS with steel that weighs 200 lbs less than a Carrera S with PCCB.
2. Unsprung weight and especially rotor life, for me, gave the edge to PCCB.
3. I have rinsed, but never had to scrub my PCCB, ever in the 3K miles I have on the car. There is no brake dust.
4. I agree with the around town operating temp theory. But I have done MT hwy 212 3 times in my 993. You will have no trouble getting to operating temp, and this is not the road to be on and worry about brake fade.

I thought spending 8K to eliminate brake dust was extreme. At the time my car was ordered there wasn't any hard facts that they were superior, and I don't like the look of yellow calipers on a gray car....sorry JMHO.
