Default 997TT in the Snow

First really nasty commute in the snow tonight. The turbo was freakin flawless! I have the conti snow sports mounted on 997c4s lobster forks, what a great combo. The car literally had no limitations whatsoever.
Comparison-wise, my 996 c4s with pirelli 240 snow sports(18s) somehow seemed slightly better. I think the tires are the big difference, and about 200ft# less tq to spin!
Hope everybody else up here got home safe!

Chris, glad you were safe out there. I would be petrified of an " I haven't got a clue how to control this thing in snow" soccer mom rear ending me. I don't even take mine out in bad weather.

I'll bet that the extra weight of the turbo car has something to do with it's better traction.

Glad to hear the car performed well and you got home safely.

With the AWD system, does having slightly different sized tires cause a problem????

I'd hate to burn out a differential.

I did some research and our stock 305/30/19s are 26.3" tall and 12.3" wide and are recommended for a 10.5-11" wheel.

On the other hand:

Toyo Proxes 4 in 295/30/19s are 25.9" tall, 11.7" wide, and are recommended for a 10"-11" wheel.

Nokian 295/30/19s are 26.0" tall, 11.4" wide, and are for a 10"-11" wheel.

Is this enough of a difference to cause a problem.

Why do they make an AWD car with 305/30/19s if no company makes that size in a winter tire????

I almost regret getting the Turbo rims.

I drove a trade in (08 Turbo Cabriolet) in the snow for over 2 hours the other day and I was blown away how well and advanced the AWD system is. I'm sure if it had snow wheels/tires on it it would have been mind blowng!

Honestly, if I had the cash, I'd drive a Turbo all year round. Car was simply amazing in the snow.

I have the porsche recommended snows, exactly the same specs as the summer tire, plus in your computer there is a way to change from summer to winter 18 or 19" rims. Ck the manual.
I love driving mine in the snow, rain, daily, track, you name it, this ain't no garage queen boys. That's what it was built for, if I wanted a tempermental bitch that has to hide from a rain drop I'd get a f car.

Had to take the car out to have some work done yesterday which took longer than expected.

Started home as the weather was getting nasty. It was NOT FUN on the summer tires LOL! It's all in the tires.

The 997TT is known for it's all-weather capability, and I can attest to that even on stock PS2.

Last winter my wife took the suv out one day and left me with the 997TT and the CLS55 on a snow day, it was snowing hard with about 2-3in on the road, me and my son were left home without food

We decided on Big Macs for dinner and while the CLS55 can't even get out of the driveway, the 997TT had no problem leaving home and travel the 10mins or so to the MacDonalds and back. Granted it was a pretty flat commute, but with a sensible right foot the car has no trouble negotiating the snow covered roads. Apart from the weird look I got from the drivethru window, there really was nothing to it.
Having said that, if the commute includes slopes, I will probably NOT drive the car.

Surgeon, glad to hear you had fun with it yesterday. I think when we sell the LX470 we will get a set of snow tires/wheels for the turbo, unless i end up getting an AWD sedan(read:S6! hah)

And the other chris, PS2's arent good in the snow? My friend tried to get me to take the turbo out with the PS2s yesterday and mess around with his WRX, i laughed so hard, said i would rather have bald tires then the PS2s in the snow.

Cabman, you dont want snow.

The commute really was a complete mess tuesday. Even with some serious tread depth snow tires on my 951 the entire trip was white knuckled! Sometimes i wish i had ABS and traction control!

Tomorrow is going to be relatively warm..going to spend all day washing the car .

I just bought a set of GT3 wheels to use in the summer; I plan to mount snows on the original TT twist wheels and drive the '04 TT next winter. The 996 C4 Cab I drove last winter was the best all-around winter car I've ever had; I hope the TT will be as good!
