2nd track day with my 997TT - buttonwillow
For those of you within 150 miles of buttonwillow...DO IT. Thanks again to Jack for organizing a great day. I also got to do some laps in a Lotus Elise and a Mitsubishi Evo.
I am thinking about getting some track wheels and tires...any suggestions???

Do what I did, I picked up a set of lobster forks from a 997 C4S, perfect size/offset(ie the same), dirt cheap too. Then I plan on grabbing a set of the N rated sport cups designed for the turbo. The wheels are extremely strong and light.

Rich,
If you don't have PCCB and have the ability to tow, the option I consider to be the cheapest and highest in performance is to use 18" wheels and tires. Almost all of the Gt3/RS cult have "re-discovered" the superiority of the 18" offerings versus the 19" pseudo track tires that the N spec Michelins and Pirellis offer. If you go with 18" you can choose from Toyo/Nitto, Hoosier, and "real" Michelin Cups. The Gt guys have found that the real track tires in 18" have given them much more neutral handling to the point of reducing the need for swaybar theatrics
I bought a set of C4 offset 18" factory take-off Carrera III's off eBay for $1200, and Hoosiers are about $1k new or $300 used. I ended up with newish Hoosiers and take-off wheels for less than the cost of just 19" tires alone.

Chris, Hoosier does make 19" tires compatible with our cars - 235/35/19 and 295/30/19 which I think will prove to be quite good performers, and at prices still much cheaper than the Cups. Hopefully even more options will come soon

I'm glad this subject came up. I will be taking the car to the track but will be driving it back & forth & so I'll need to drive there & back on the weeels/tires I track with. If I go with 18's & "real" track tires will I be screwed if it rains? I've always tracked my cars on the stock street wheels/tires before but as I do more & get better, I'd like to explore the options.

I've driven cups to/ from the glen/LI without issue, just gotta make sure you have enough tread when you leave! The do suck in the rain though, once got stuck in a downpour cming back from pocono, really, really sucked.
As far as 18's go, just make sure the demensions are within spec, so as not to f with your psm/abs/awd system.
