Default Need to cool down 997TT everytime?

Hey everyone,

My 997TT will be here in a week, so I passed by the dealership to make sure all is in order. Had a chat with a local Porsche Club member there about the new TT, and he says that despite the new VTG technology I'll still have to do the usual 1-2 minute cool down at a standstill after a good drive.

I know this might have been discussed before, but I just wanted to know what the general consensus is about this issue.

Does VTG eliminate the need to cool down the turbos on the driveway, or is it still the same basic theory?

I ask because it would be annoying to have to sit in the car at my destination waiting 1-2 minutes everytime..

Yes. Rennlist member 'KPG' has discussed this many times before and is an excellent resource.

It would be interesting to find out if the VTG's are oil or oil/water cooled. My 944 turbo is both and there is an aux water coolant pump that will circulate fluid into the center/bearing section of the turbo for a few minutes after shutdown. I would be somewhat surprised if this safety feature had been eliminated in the tt's. Like others have said, it is probably a good idea to train yourself to do some cooldown regardless.

They were eliminated/not implemented on the 996TT's.
There were also a TSB or two regarding aftermarket 'turbo timers' and the problems associated with integration to the factory alarm system.

According to the PCNA dealer training document, the VTG turbos are equipped with a water cooling circuit. Stephen at IA had expressed some skepticism and was going to report when he had the rear bumper assembly off. I don't know what his observations were.

Anyone know for sure?

So I guess I'll just have to remember to take it easy the last 1-2 miles of my trip and everything should be peachy..

Thanks for the info!

Just 5 days to go before the TT arrives. Fortunately I've got a pal over at the port who can get the car cleared pronto, so I hope to post pics of my pride and joy next week..

Shut the car off after driving and listen for an electrically driven circulating pump....like the old 951's.

So, it's okay to shut down the car after its been driven hard? A friend with an older 993 says to leave it running for 2 minutes or so..even a friend with a 996TT had a turbo timer for this purpose too.

Even in my 951, I let it idle for about 1-2 minutes to be sure nothing gets coked up in the turbo

Cool down, non cool down, turbo timer, non turbo timer....after 100K miles, you're going to be taking your turbos out.

water cooled = no need to idle to flow the oil into the turbos to precent coking.
On saying that, it does not hurt to go easy on it 1-2 minutes before shutting down simply for peace of mind. Would not go the timer route, just be patient
