Default 997.1 vs 997.2

Currently have a 2010 Panamera Turbo. It's great, but I might consider a 911.

I saw
by an accredited YouTuber who basically said the 997.1 was better and the steering was more vague on the .2.

Has anyone experienced both cars enough to have an opinion? I'm not married to ideas like I need to have PDK, I want the better experience and the better car. I'm thinking Turbo or Turbo S.

Thanks.

This was brought up previously and apparently the cars had suspension modifications and needed some repair which could have led to the steering feel. I've got an 09tt 6 speed and love it. If you are wanting an auto/pdk then the .2 is the way to go as the pdk is a big step up from the tip tronic auto in the .1.if you want a 6 speed then it's up to you. A lot less .2 manuals but cheaper and easier to find in a .1. I feel like longer term the Metzger 997.1 tt may be a more sought after engine and not sure about the dfi in the .2s..

Of you don't want a stick shift I would certainly go 997.2.. If you are wanting a 6 speed it is up to you. You will pay a large premium for a 6 speed 997.2 as these were the last stick shift turbos produced..

Good luck with your serach

you are going to find people on both sides of the fence on this. the reality has already spoken as far as pricing goes between the .1 and .2 .
  • the DFI is the basis for all of the new engines and clearly has avoided issues.
  • the chassis design and AWD system are significantly different as far as spring rates, sway bars, and rear wheel biased (differential and software are completely different) vs. a more AWD bias for the .1. (though you could easily modify either cars with coilovers and DSC to end up with similar handling machines)
  • Torque vectoring and electronic engine mounts on the .2 add value.
  • PCM
the most important thing is to figure out the original sticker price. Then you can tell a stripper to something with more options especially comparing between two vehicles.

There are certainly objective improvements going from .1 to .2, as noted above. But what's better to drive is completely personal, IMO. If "better to drive" to you means robust acceleration, you're not going to do better than a .2 S, stock for stock. Otherwise, like any expensive purchase, my opinion is that you drive some .1 and .2 cars to see what works best for you. I think the popular opinion around here is that the objective improvements in the .2 cars means that it's also a better driving car. I haven't driven a .2 car, so I can't provide an opinion on that. I do enjoy my .1 just fine for whatever that's worth.

I want to disagree with Eaks in writing off a tip. A 997.1 tip with upgraded TCU tune is a very quick shifting car. Its been measured by markski and I don't want to misquote so I won't, but it was very close to the 997.2 pdk shift times. With steering wheel paddles its great fun not at all lazy anymore. Its a cheap and easy upgrade as well. I am fairly certain anyone writing off a tip hasn't even driven one. Tip also doesn't have the issues of the pdk and the inability to get service support, mercedes trans is very easy to get support for, basically in all the amg cars.

The only 2 reasons I believe you would take a .2 over a .1 is if you are getting a 6speed for an investment, or if you want the newer car in general. There are some benefits to a newer car for sure, all the plastics, hoses, belts, even interior leather, etc are fresher also no coolant lines or cam issue that will need dealt with on the 3.8. Performance doesn't really matter much as if you care you'll get an exhaust and tune and then they are all equal and much faster than stock. Drive them both, then you'll know!

This may very well be correct. I was in a tip once and was not really impressed (this was a stock car). I know there was a huge change in my old e-gear Gallardo with a TCU tune so this is valuable information for the OP. I think no matter what your best bet is to drive both and see what makes the most sense to you.

Thanks

First off I've never driven a 997 Turbo so take everything below with grain of salt.
My Thoughts based on usecase
Daily:
  1. 997.2 PDK
  2. 997.1 Tip
Special/Weekend car:
  1. 997.1.5 Manual
  2. 997.1 Manual
  3. 997.2 Manual
Investment Car:
  1. 997.2 Manual
  2. 997.1.5 Manual
  3. 997.1 Manual

There are plus and minuses to both.
If you want to mod it go with a .1
Looks are subjective but imo I prefer the exterior and interior of the .2 by a huge margin.
Manual vs. Tip vs. PDK is a personal preference. But imo having went from a manual to a TTS I'd have a hard decision going back.
I love coming out of a corner with my TTS and giving it just enough throttle to induce a controlled slide.
If I could have any 997 TT or TTS, and I can, I would choose a .2 TTS. Which I did.
At the end of the day it's like asking which super model you want to go to bed with. There is no wrong answer.

Agree with the above comments. Again I think it comes down to personal preference. In my experience I went from a 991.1 TTS to a 997.1TT Manual, and I have no regrets. Sure the interior and performance of the 991 pdk is far superior, but theres something about driving a manual 911 turbo that is a very unique experience and very engaging. Imo its a perfect balance of modern and retro with one of the best engines from Porsche. as mentioned already, there is no wrong answer here, you just gotta drive and find out what you prefer.

Additionally, the delta between the 991.1 and 997.2 PDK is much smaller now than it used to be. So unless you prefer the size and style of 997 gen, the 991.1 is actually within reach and a lot more updated obviously. just something to think about.

This would be my take too. The TTS is almost a different thing, so would pick it over any other turbo variant if I could. If I couldn’t get a 997.2TTS, I would prob go for any 997 with a manual. I would probably not really even consider a 997.1 tip.

I would agree except for the investment - Due to the MEZGER ( know the 9A1 is newer faster etc and as far as i know in the US anyways rarer) i think it would go:

Investment Car:
  1. 997.1.5 Manual
  2. 997.1 Manual
  3. 997.2 Manual
The heritage/value/love of the MEZGER is not to be understated.

IMHO

Correct me if I am wrong but .2 TT DFI engines appear to be prone to bore scoring in cold climates where .1 TT motors do not?

My car is in NY and I haven’t had any issues…like nothing in 5 years. Nor have I had any other issues.

I think bore scoring is like the issue with cabriolets having the drain tubes clog up around the top… yeah sure it has happened but for most not really a problem.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...o-cabriolet-4/

Could we see a 200k 997TT today (It's already at $164k w/premium)? Seems the market is pretty strong for this 997.2 manual cab.....I've not seen any .1s move the needle like the manual .2s seem to be doing as of late. I'd put the 997.2 manual at the top of the value heap right now; it's the rarest model, so it makes sense.

Simon thats a fair take. My thinking is that the 997.1.5 wont lose much value over time. but for a investment car since so few 997.2 turbo manuals and its the last manual turbo. Those seem to be asking the highest prices. I put the 997.1.5 turbo(the car I would buy) as the special/weekend car because the pricing isn't as high as the .2s and so you can enjoy the car a good amount of miles without worrying about devaluing the car a large amount. I do think the 997.1.5 is pretty unknown by general public and even some Porsche fans. Even I just learned this year that 09 GT2s have the 997.1.5 treatment.
