So I recently pinned the cams on my 08 Turbo, Bank 1 was spun no P0021 code.
Only one section of the oil passages were blocked by the pressed on spun cam collar.
My friend Dennis has the P0021 code and both sets of passages were blocked or when the collar spun.
Posting this as informational only as the list of folks dealing with this is more than I can count on 1 hand this year. My cam right side passages clear Dennis's cam completely blocked
What are the downfalls of driving around with those passages blocked? Seems like pinning blocks it anyways?
My understanding if the passages are blocked you lose the variocam function.
ECU cannot advance or retard timing.
I suspect it will have a drastic affect on performance if the timing is off.
Driving with the cam spun leads to poor low and high rpm performance. The midrange is similar to normal. The variocam actuator on the cam snout, not the solenoid, can also become damaged due oil starvation. This happened in my case, but all that means is that it must also be replaced while pinning the cams.
This becoming a much more common failure, particularly on the 07s. This is good info for the group as this failure mode increases in frequency.
Yes, agree on all points. Really starting to see this quite a bit - most thankfully have been "partially spun" without a CEL, in engines where the cams were removed to perform this preventive procedure. Partially spun cam sleeves can usually be rotated back into place by a competent machine shop and then pinned into place. I am not sure if fully block sleeves can be salvaged - maybe someone with more experience than me can comment. Great thread, great info as these cars turn into temperamental teenagers
I just spoke with Porsche Austin last night about the cam repair they did on my 08tt in december 2014. Weirdly, they kept no information on the repair beyond the statement, "Repair valve train assembly. Fault P0021 cam position bank 2 implausible, found oil sleeve on cams spun. Sent cams to machine shop for repair and assembled valve train" - no detailed parts list or work history on that ~$12k job.
I confirmed with them that meant they PINNED the cams at least, as my concern was Porsche could've just replaced the cams with new stock and it could happen again. 23400 miles on the car when it was fixed, no idea if that was immediately after it happened or a little while.
From what I understand, appears to be a metallurgical issue unique to the 07-09 mezger though I'm not sure how many 09s it ever impacted.

As much as I love the .1 and the Mezger's character, I always chuckle a little when I hear people describe it as "bulletproof." Yeah, maybe you're not likely to throw a rod but most of them over their lives will require a minimum of $10k in repairs (camshaft + coolant pipes).

Comical. Local Indy I used to go to did that to me. I paid without looking... oh and as a bonus they had their new, young tech take the car out for a "test drive" to make sure everything was okay mechanically after the oil change.
I stopped at a red light, looked over at the receipt, saw the amount I was charged and the air filters changed I didn't ask for. I almost lost my ****. Porsche, Indy, they all can be the same. I do my own oil change now for about $100.

Not to get to off topic but the young tech taking the test drive reminds me of a review I read back when launch control first came out. The review went through how it worked, explained the mechanism, and the blistering 0-60 times. It ended by saying that launch control was so powerful and sophisticated it's use should be left to qualified professionals. It then clarified that by this it meant the car park attendant at your racketball club.
