Default DIY maintenance and repairs on a 997 Turbo

Hi all,

I am thinking of jumping into the pool here, thinking of selling my 987 Boxster S and 996 and moving to a 997 Turbo. I have my own hoist and do practically everything on my cars. On my 996 last winter, I installed the IMS Solution, clutch, water pump, coilovers etc, so I can turn a wrench pretty well. I also have a Durametric.

Most of my experience is with the M96 engine and RWD, how much different, and complicated is it to work on the Metzger? I probably wont end up with a 2010+ as budget probably wont allow it.

If you can do all that, you will have no issues working on the Turbo.

Ok thanks for the replies guys. Looking at a 2009 cabrio with a manual and a rebuilt title but damage was done 6 years and 20,000 miles ago. Was told the car passed all structural inspection, was checked by Porsche and chassis wasn’t bent from the accident. Just bumpers and suspension were repaired. Price could be very attractive.

I am sure I will get scorned on that one, but I drive my cars so I wouldn’t be worried about originality (read: modding it) or putting miles on it. I will just have to do a ton of due diligence on purchase. And I’m a bit of a gambler lol.

buy it and drive it like you stole it...
I'm willing to fix anything on mine... but not sure that I would tackle the spark plugs needing a 3 inch drop of the engine (997.2) ..
everything is pretty straight forward.. just quadruple check the information that you will get from the internet as some inaccurate information is out there.

Good Luck!

I read something about rear spoiler issues. Any other items to keep an eye out on a ppi. Do the Metzger engines need to be be bore scoped.

Metzger has cooling line fitting issues.... some reports or spoiler issues....not much else... these are really great and enjoyable cars. You could go with the premis of buying the cheapest one you can find that suits you and have $5K in the kitty to just use for modifications and unforeseen issues and your smile will be just as big as mine running through the curves (and a lot less $$$$$s). Good luck

On the rebuilt title, my advice is to check with your insurance company in advance and make sure you can get coverage. Many of the larger companies in the States shy away from insuring higher end vehicles with rebuilt or salvage titles due to the potential liability with them, and if they do agree to insure them they place a premium on the coverage. Could be different in Canada but something to be aware of.

Yes definitely will check that, could be a deal breaker if it can’t be insured. I haven’t heard of any issues with this in Canada though, but maybe just because I personally have never had to insure one.

The car has 40,000 miles, well optioned and the goal is to get it for 45-50k usd.
