Don't use a car wash - the soaps they use are very harsh and designed to remove grime from unloved people movers and cars that get washed once every 6 months. Get a couple of buckets and do it yourself on the weekend.

Plus it likely jets a ton of water into your engine bay.

Finally got to the bottom of it. Piece of plastic wedged in the thermostat. Thinking it was from the water pump impeller that failed earlier in the life of the car.
