New Stablemate to my 2012 Turbo S :o)
My current 2012 MB S63 had been towed 3 times last month for fuel pump issues, pretty depressing, breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Also, it was rear wheel drive so it handled terribly in snow/sleet/icy conditions and even bad rain. Thanks to the dozen YouTube videos on this new 2018 S63, I decided to call my local dealer in Silver Spring MD a month ago to see if they had any to look at next to an E63. I figured I'd wait 3 years to really buy one, as I certainly couldn't afford one now, I just wanted to check it out.
They said they had a one of a kind Designo Grey coming in, in 3 weeks. It was ordered for a customer in MATTE GREY but by accident Mercedes painted it in Designo Grey. The customer didn't want it so they were stuck with a unicorn, one of a kind car.
I ONLY went to the dealer to look at it, and fell in love with it. They gave me a good # on my 2012 Designo Grey S63 and I bought the car a few hours ago. It's the only new car I've ever bought for myself. I work 80-100 hours a week, no kids, no wife as of 8 years ago, no GF right now, house paid off, cars paid off, I thought I kind of deserved it yet of course felt guilty as hell spending so much on a car. I'm just a regular guy in a regular sales job for a large telecom company.
I never, ever intended to buy it, I didn't think I could ever afford one until they were 3 years old but when I ran the #'s on keeping my car for 2-3 more years, and what this cost, I decided - F it, just get it. MSRP of $188385. No carbon ceramic brakes which I really wanted, but they're really rare to find on this car, used, anywhere. I think there's only 1 for sale now in the US with them on the car.
I didn't buy the Road Hazard,Tire/wheel Cosmetic damage package for the $2526 including the dent repair, windshield chip repair, key replacement benefit (seems high, should I just wing it and not get this? Shop around?) I also didn't get the maintenance paid in advance package for $2899 - they said the 3 services will cost $3600 if I just pay as I go so this is a "deal", and it could cost even more than that over the 3 years. I only bought the car. They said I had 30 days to think about this other stuff.
They didn't sell a clear bra type solution either - is this necessary on a new MB S63? I have it done on my 997 Turbo S but ... do I really need it on this car? My 2012 looked fairly perfect after being 6 years old. There's a place in town that does this, my body shop, or maybe somewhere else. Not sure I want to spend the money on this.
Thoughts?
Feeling very grateful right now. I plan to keep both of these cars till the wheels fall off, but ... many of us say that at some point. We'll see how that goes.

Color is great (probably better than the matte...) and it's kind of fun to see how small the TTS looks next to it. It's easy to lose perspective when you're always reading Rennlisters talking about the 997 being a bloated luxury barge compared to their '72 longhood.
Also, let's not pretend someone with a paid-off house/S63/TTS buying a $200k Mercedes is a "regular guy."

Beautiful car. FWIW, if I ever bought a brand new car, I'd probably get a new car detail done, then wrap the entire thing in XPEL film. One of the few benefits of buying brand new is it doesn't have someone else's swirls and rock chips yet, so I figure it'd be worth the expense to keep the paint pristine. Of course, I've never bought brand new, so that's entirely hypothetical...

Steve,
Congratulations on getting a beautiful new ride. Perfect complement to the 997TTS too.
Seems to me you have worked very hard and made sound financial decisions! Enjoy both your cars in good health!

Hmmm. I found out it's about $2200 to do the front end, hood, and mirrors and $6200 to do the whole car in EXPEL. Not sure it's worth it to me. Will chew on it some more. Interestingly enough, the trunk in this car isn't much bigger than my 997 Turbo! Glad I don't have kids and a wife and need lots of trunk space. My 2012 S63 had double the space.
