Does anyone have any thoughts on new intake systems for our cars? Some I have seen look great, but I was wondering if they actually reduce the performance of our cars? Thank you for any help on the topic.
Short of getting the 997-2 RS dual intake, or the 4.0 CF system (you'll need an RS deck lid) the OEM intake is about as good as it gets. Some people put reusable filters (K&N, etc.) but since they are significantly more porous they end up sucking dust and dirt inside the engine, so I wouldn't recommend them.
The intake system is more a sum of parts piece if you really want to see any gains. You need a good set of headers to capitalize on it. As mentioned you can go with .2rs or cup dual inlet airbox, 4.0 airbox, both of which require either decklid with dual air outlets or you to cut your existing decklid to add a second outlet (manthey has a kit). Another option is the Dundon airbox which can be bought in dual inlet configuration or single inlet. The design behind it is the increase the volume of the airbox so that their is more air to pull in. It also utilizes the dual cone filters.
For an intake to really help, the exhaust side needs to be opened up. The typical order of power mods is headers, intake, tune, deep end...
That said our dual cone single inlet intake will likely open up 5-7whp with no other mods, on a car with headers it's 8-9whp The way it works is the filter area goes up, the speed of the air can slow down as there is more filter available for it to get through, this means there is less pressure drop across the filter and less hp needed to suck the air through the filter, allowing more power to get to the wheels. Keep in mind this is static on the dyno, not dynamic on the road. All of these cars have a ram air effect that is a little harder to quantify without a wind tunnel...
Here's some pics of the single hole dual inlet (been selling them out every time we get them in!).
The way it works is we have a balance pipe that joins the two filters from the side with the opening to the decklid to the side that is closed off. This allows the pressure to balance as the air demands go up.
They are Carbon Fiber and look quite nice in the engine bay and are a direct fit (for the 997.1, the fan from the 997.2 is required and available from us).
We have a few other variants as well including a matched 4.0RS decklid for the 4.0RS air intake (has dual inlet and much larger air holes...)
