The electric steering in the 991 has taken a LOT out of the experience. There are differing opinions, incl. from other learned folks, but for one guy this is night-and-day.
So, regardless of the transmission in the 991.2, I don't think it'll be the same kind of fun as before. Not less fun by any stretch, but certainly a different kind of satisfaction.
both are great in their own ways. The 991 feels to me more refined, a more polished daily driver. You still feel and hear the engine, but the cabin feels more "sealed". Honestly, the electric steering is well done, only a subtle difference to the hydraulic assist imho. But that engine, 9000RPM howl, very eager to rev, and alittle more mid range grunt. the PDK is clearly faster, easier, and allows one to maximize focus on their line.
why did i get the 997.2?
the fabled gt1 mezger engine. above 4k rpm, the engine note changes entirely. just savage. the more direct, raw connection between driver and car is unmatched. i wanted a car that proportionally rewards the effort driver puts in. the more analogue and mechanical experience is also something that is slowly disappearing and I wanted a piece of that. and of course, given budgetary constraints, it was within my price range.
0-60 around 4seconds....certainly not the fastest....but my former F80 M3 was about as fast in a straightline, with DCT. And that was fast enough for me.
kind of stating the obvious, but still nice to read it
991 gt3 is an absolute thrill in its own way, but definitely less connected and less demanding in total of the driver and driver skill while broadening the everyday 'use-ability' and comfort of the car
thing is, most of us with a gt3 don't drive it for every day use and comfort... we drive it for the excitement, and 7gt3's deliver that like none other

thx for sharing

So what happens when the 1.2 turns up with the R's 6mt and 4.0L?
I have both and actually find the 9A1 9k motor to be much more "wild" and fun. Idle is slightly better with the Mezger but I really prefer the 991 9A1 lump. And yes I have over 500 laps on my local track (PBIR) with both 991 and 997 GT3's. Don't drive my 997 much anymore.

curious as to why?
I think I might be seriously tempted by a 1.2 car with 4.0L and the R's 6MT and LWFW...

Well automatically (pun intended) it's faster because it's up a gear.
Regarding the 997.2 article as we have stated in other threads the 997 is an epic car. .1 or .2 (I have both) doesn't matter. Take these Porsche rags with a grain of salt. They run out of stuff to print.
The newer cars will be great too. You can always bet on improvement...although I do find it curious how obsessed about option packages the 991 guys seem to be. "Nice spec" is all guys say on that board...but I digress
not sure if 1.2 gt3 will be 3.8 or 4.0 but it seems like the mt is a virtual certainty... regardless, it will be another epic gt3, it will be completely thrilling, and i will have one for sure
but if i take the first-hand driving experiences i've had thus far with the 1gt3, 1gt3rs and gt4 and try to extrapolate these into an upcoming 1.2 mt gt3, i would venture to say it would be undoubtedly remarkable but still very very different than a 7gt3...
- form factor much bigger,
- 1gt3 suspended platform much more stable and much more forgiving (managing 7gt3's front end near grip limit is not for faint of heart, whereas 1gt3/rs is oh so calm and planted, then slides out very gently past grip limit)
- it would blip for you in sport mode (unless they reprogram the sport button), no such bail out in 7gt3
- the rear steer imparts noticeable artificial rotation in tight turns with a 'magic hand' feel,
- the steering feel is very accurate but very muted in comparison ...
- i also think the uber-rabid last 1500 rpm of the 9a1 will be harder for most to play with on track using a manual since we may incur manual over-revs... not a worry with the pdk of course
so, in short, 1.2 gt3 w/ mt would be still a very very different kettle of fish from 7gt3
sidebar comment - i disagree with poster above saying 9a1 is more exciting than mezger... i feel the gt3/rs 9a1 is made to feel more exciting at the top end due to its magical coupling with the pdk-s... the rev-outs and the shifts/jolts are stuff of f1 dreams... the mezger's nature of coming on cam at 4500 rpm to redline is more tractable and the surge is more exciting than the same with 9a1 if self-shifted... the nature of the mezger coming on is a lion's roar... the last 2000 rpm of 9a1 is a rabid buzzsaw quality... different, very different

Thanks for posting this article. Further confirmation of what I already knew about what an epic P car this has already become. I haven't been following how strong the market is for this model until I noticed a used, black .2 with around 9K Km on it and they were asking 159k Euros and I was blown away. The salesman told me in Germany the .2 GT3 is their most popular used GT model because of what it offers for the price and how rock solidly reliable they are. Sales time for these is around a couple weeks or less. By contrast there was a black 4.0RS right next to it asking 329K that had been sitting there for over three months. I was there because mine needed a new starter. One of only three minor service issues I've had since owning the car from new, all covered under Porsche's extended warranty program. Yeah, she's a keeper.
