If you are starting as far north as SF, take Skyline/35 all the way down to 9 and then drop into Santa Cruz. Way better than screwing around on the 101 or 280. If you aren't that far north, you can access it off 92 or Woodside Rd and still get the best part of the drive. Really from where it connect to 92 and south of there is what is really worth driving.

i'm south of that part of Skyline, so i usually head up 9 to Skyline and then head to Alice's from there. could take 17 over to Santa Cruz and drop onto 1, but I've done that part of the drive many times.
looking forward to checking out 25 and Foxen for the first time on the way down tomorrow.
thanks for all the advice! will post up some pics after the drive.

got back from the Santa Barbara trip yesterday. drive down was quite nice with a mix of Hwy 101 and some back roads. weather in SB was great and our stay at the Eagle Inn was quite nice.
Highway 25: nice road with almost no other cars that winds through some ranch land. had some nice twisties as you got close to Pinnacles National Monument (sadly, you don't see much from the east side...)
View of the Valley from Bitterwater Rd / King City Rd
did 101 from King City down to Santa Maria and then cut over to Foxen Canyon.
this was a fun road and we stopped at Zaca Mesa winery for a little picnic.
Stayed at the Eagle Inn in Santa Barbara. very nice place in quiet part of West Beach area.

decided to take hwy 1 from San Luis Obispo all the way up to Monterey on the way home, but sadly was quite foggy and smokey most of the way. saw fire trucks from most every NorCal city along Hwy 1 battling the fire.
other than fire equipment and foggy views of the coastline, this was the most common view during the drive...
the rear end of a Prius pulling away going up a hill

have to say, most of the people on Hwy 1 were pretty good about using the turnouts to let me pass. there are a couple of sections on Hwy 1 that go to one lane due to construction though, so I'd end up stuck in a group of cars from time to time.
had the weather been nicer and no massive fire going on, the views would have made up for the traffic. it was still a nice drive, but if i'm honest, doing Foxen Canyon and some other inland back roads on the way home would have probably been more fun.

haha. nah, i was able to handle the Prius drivers. it was the people in the rental Mustang convertibles that were trouble.

Nice! Yeah 1 can be frustrating during the summer. Such a great road but more about the scenery than the drive.
Did you hit up the Tri tip or restaurant in Los Olivos?

Spyerx -- we ended up in Los Olivos too late for the spot there. and on Sunday we were too early for lunch at the tri-tip place.
we'll probably head down to SD to visit friends in late Aug or Sept, so will catch at least one of them on that trip. the bacon steak sounds like it will be worth it! that trip will probably be in the RS4 since need to bring back some stuff from SD.
