My driver's seat was looking quite ratty so I bought one of the lint shavers discussed in various alcantara repair threads.
I scuffed up the surface with a brush, then used the shaver on horiz and vertical surfaces. Cleansed afterwards with wet cloth/soap. It only took a few minutes and I was really pleasantly surprised by how well this works. Best $16.00 I ever spent (Evercare brand), so if you're after some instant gratification, this is the way to go!
Added bonus is car is now lighter and therefore faster.

Greek,
I used the same shaver as the OP on my 7.2 3 steering wheel with 33,000miles on it and it worked really well. I didn't apply much pressure at all as I didn't want to scalp it, well worth the effort imho.
