Any car that looks this good, has over 500 hp and a manual transmission is not boring. On track maybe, but not anywhere else.

its not boring on track either, you just need to learn to drive it same as we do with our beetles.

My preference

GT3
944LS
R8

You need a racing team behind you to make a R8 really work for track.

All said and done, I would do the GT3, although the 944LS would also be a great track weapon.

While it is cool to have a sleeper that no one sees coming, the chasing gremlins thing is definitely true. My brother has a turbo Miata which is crazy fast but he is always dicking with it between sessions. All I have to do is pull and the pits and remember not to pull the parking brake. Makes for a much more relaxing weekend.

depends if you get a kick from the fiddling and what the fiddling is, faults and issues that get to much in the way of driving - no so much- tweaks to get more from you hand built pride and joy- a joy.

I have done both for myself and race teams and the 'do it yourself' is my preference- there's a lot of pride in showing off your design skills and handy work in the paddock and on track.

Even with this nice but old guy who can't drive it still does a 2:02.xx on Millers outer loop. For reference I watched P. Long with the track to himself run a 2:05.xx in a 11 gt3rs and 2:02.xx in a GT2 RS. My ST1 car that he blows away down the front straight does a 1:57.xx

All I'm saying is a LS 944 can be very fast for the money
I know the "old guy" that owns this 944 LS FrankenPorsche and although it's fast, it's been a maintenance nightmare. Plus it's probably worth less than 10% of what he has in it and it breaks regularly. The best track car period, is the GT3

Do you know what he is into it? I guess I really don't, I assumed it would not be that much. On the other hand I know how fast it adds up when you start putting stuff together

Since he bought it it's had at least two motors and a couple of gearbox rebuilds. Plus many problem with suspension, exhaust, added pwr steering, and things just generally falling off of it. It's maintained by a pretty good race shop as well but things that don't normally break do so on a regular basis, the chassis just wasn't made for that much torque.

but is the 'old guy' happy- I'd guess so specially when he stuffs it in front of more expensive hardware on the track. Plus even with two motors, a couple of gear box rebuilds and all the other stuff it will not add up to 50% of a GT3 and I would guess he's had the car for years so if he piles into the concrete he wouldn't care.

Anyone tracking their car regularly will have to spend on maintance.

i think it's called S&M?
some ppl cannot leave well enough alone they enjoy pain. if there's a hole, they put a stick in it......

whatever flows their boat. i like a car that fires up, add gas, just go...

Old guy = Dan
Dan couldn't be happier, he loves the challenge of making a 944 fast. I still have soot on one of my instructor jackets from when his first 944T caught fire at the Spokane race track. That was the end of his efforts to work with the turbo 4 so he bought another 944 with the LS conversion. Numerous challenges/engines/gearbox's and a couple of walls later it's actually a pretty impressive car, and his driving is coming along nicely. Quite frankly I think he'd be bored to tears with a reliable GT3. He's addicted to the pain of trying to keep the 944 in one piece, it must just feel good when it finally runs right and finishes a race.
Regardless he's out there doing it and having fun.....

Now as far as R8's go, they're not that bad on the track. I have a V10 Plus it's like a Cayman on steroids. Making it neutral handling was simple I just ignored Audi's stupid tire pressure settings.
Getting the camber right is another thing altogether. You have to shim the lower A arms with Lamborghini shims as the eccentrics on the Audi max out at about -1.5 deg, nowhere near enough it needs around -2.5 F&R like most GT3's.
Plus it has the same hideously expensive self destructing ceramic rotors that need to be replaced with steel. The ride height is not adjustable and the seats are right out of an A4 grocery getter with no option for sport seats.
The V10 is awesome, especially with the new twin clutch paddle box. If you're looking at the earlier versions don't get the single clutch paddle box it's terrible, get a manual instead.
Bottom line, the GT3 is still the best track car out there...

I thought there was an IMS on all Boxsters, Caymans, and 911s (including the GT3) from 1998/1998 - 2008 ... no?
