My suggestion is to take 1 all the way north and into canada and then come down into PA after making a trans canadian trip.

the one time i did an almost cross country drive with a friend was SF to Ann Arbor, so the route we chose went a bit further north and we were able to see where Evel Knievel "jumped" the Snake River Canyon, Craters of the Moon, Yellowstone, Devil's Tower and Mt Rushmore. oh, and we stopped by Wall Drug since we saw signs for it for hundreds of miles.

can't say we had much in the way of good local food along the way, but did get to stop by a fireworks warehouse in Wyoming!
